We’ve all heard the golden rule: always read the book before watching the movie. But let's be honest, that can backfire. You build a vivid picture of the characters in your head, only for the casting director to choose someone completely different. Talk about a mind bend!

Here’s a plot twist for your reading routine: try watching the movie first.

When you screen the film ahead of time, your brain instantly adopts the cast for the page. Then, when you dive into the book, you get to sit back and enjoy all the rich subplots, hidden backstories, and extra scenes that never made the final edit. It’s the ultimate win-win!

The Merredin Library is packed with page-turners that inspired your favorite screen adaptations. Check out our first round of picks below!

Have you read (or watched) any of these yet? Let us know in the comments! πŸ‘‡

Looking for a fresh twist on the world's most famous detective? Stop by the library this week and check out one of our copies of An Enola Holmes Mystery by Nancy Springer!

If you loved watching Millie Bobby Brown crack cases on Netflix, you are in for a treat. The books dive even deeper into Enola’s sharp wit, daring disguises, and brilliant mind as she outsmarts her famous older brother, Sherlock Holmes.

Here are the two titles currently sitting on our shelves waiting for you:

𝑻𝒉𝒆 π‘ͺ𝒂𝒔𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 π‘΄π’Šπ’”π’”π’Šπ’π’ˆ 𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒒𝒖𝒆𝒔𝒔 β€” Where it all begins! On her fourteenth birthday, Enola wakes up to find her mother has vanished. Escaping her brothers' plans to send her off to a strict finishing school, Enola flees to London to unravel a web of secret codes while hunting for a kidnapped young Viscount.

𝑻𝒉𝒆 π‘ͺ𝒂𝒔𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 π‘©π’Šπ’›π’‚π’“π’“π’† 𝑩𝒐𝒖𝒒𝒖𝒆𝒕𝒔 β€” Sherlock’s right-hand man, Dr. John Watson, has gone missing! When a mysterious bouquet of flowers symbolising death is delivered to the Watson home, Enola knows he is in grave danger. Operating under disguise in Victorian London, she uses the secret language of flowers to track down the clues before it is too late.

Ready to start solving? Head over to the YA section and check them out with your library card today!

Readers across Australia are discovering a powerful truth: their love of books can change lives. Through the ShelterBox Australia Book Club, every page they turn helps fund emergency shelter and essential aid, including tents, water filters, solar lights and mosquito nets, for families left with nowhere to live after tropical storms, earthquakes and conflict.

Each book is carefully chosen to reflect the cultures, challenges and resilience of people experiencing displacement. These stories open windows into lives readers may never otherwise encounter, building connection, empathy and understanding with every chapter.

For a small monthly donation, members become part of a nationwide community that votes on a hand-picked shortlist every six weeks. They read the chosen book in whatever way suits them, whether that’s curling up with a library copy, supporting a local bookshop, downloading an e-book or listening on the go, then meet online for thoughtful discussion, shared learning, and author events.

ShelterBox was founded by a Rotary club and has supported more than three million people in around 100 countries.

Extra points if you can tell me:
