π΄π² IMPORTANT UPDATE: NEW E-BIKE & E-SCOOTER LAWS FROM TODAY
Families, please be aware that new Queensland laws for e-bikes, e-scooters and other Personal Mobility Devices (PMDs) take effect today, Monday 31 August 2026.
Under the new rules:
πΉ Riders of e-bikes, e-scooters, e-skateboards and e-unicycles must be at least 16 years old AND hold a valid licence, with a Learner licence being the minimum requirement.
πΉ 12β17 year olds may ride when supervised by a parent or caregiver.
πΉ 16 and 17 year olds who do not hold a Learner licence must also be supervised while riding.
πΉ The supervising parent or caregiver must remain close enough to give the young rider instructions.
Exemptions also apply for eligible medical conditions and disabilities, as well as riding within certain designated recreational areas, including rail trails, mountain bike trails and private off-road cycling facilities.
π
There is a three-month grace period until 30 November 2026 for those eligible for a medical exemption to obtain the required exemption form.
With many of our students using e-bikes and e-scooters to travel to and from school, we encourage all families to familiarise themselves with the new requirements.
Please take some time to discuss the changes with your young person and make sure they understand the rules before riding.
π΄π² Know the rules. Ride responsibly. Stay safe.
