Smoke advisory. Leipens HR commencing Tuesday

Tuesday, 28 April 2026 @ 1100hrs Snowy Monaro Rural Fire Service Brigades will implement a strategic hazard reduction in Tinderry, supported by aircraft.
The burn will continue to produce smoke across the Monaro District.
As the prescribed burn will generate smoke, hot embers and heat, it is important that you consider the
following:
• Keep doors and windows closed to prevent smoke entering homes;
• Keep outdoor furniture under cover to prevent ember burns;
• Retract pool covers to prevent ember damage;
• Remove washing from clotheslines;
• Ensure pets have a protected area;
• If you are driving a vehicle, slow down, keep windows up and turn headlights on; and
• If you have asthma or a lung condition, reduce outdoor activities. If smoke levels are high and if
shortness of breath or coughing develops, take your reliever medicine or seek medical advice

Smoke Advisory

Just a heads up that NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) along with your local RFS, will be continuing their hazard reduction burn in the Tinderry Nature Reserve over the next few days.

You may notice smoke along Burra Road and around the village—this is expected as part of the planned burn.

This work is really important in helping reduce fuel loads and keeping our community safe.

Thanks for your understanding and support 😊

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service will be conducting the Cassidy's Creek Hazard Reduction (HR) burn in the Tinderry Nature Reserve commencing tomorrow (Wednesday 15 April 2026). The HR burn is expected to take a few days to complete.

Smoke will be visible in surrounding areas. Residents are advised to keep windows and doors closed if needed, and to drive with caution where smoke may reduce visibility.

Crews from NSW Rural Fire Service - will be assisting NPWS with the HR and we ask residents travelling along Burra Road to be aware of increased truck movement and to be mindful of crews in and around the area.

🔥 Bush Fire Danger Period Concludes – Key Information for Landholders

The Bush Fire Danger Period (BFDP) has concluded across the Snowy Monaro District

While a fire permit may no longer be required, there are still important legal responsibilities in place for anyone planning to burn.

If you intend to conduct a burn, you must:

✔ Notify NSW RFS at least 24 hours prior You can submit your notification online here: 🌐 www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/notify

✔ Notify your immediate neighbours at least 24 hours prior

This is critical to help prevent unnecessary Triple Zero (000) calls and avoid emergency brigade responses to planned burns.

Before lighting up, ensure you:

• Check weather conditions
• Have appropriate resources on hand
• Monitor the fire at all times
• Remain in attendance until the fire is fully extinguished

For more information on BFDP and safe burning practices, visit: 🌐 www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/BFDP

Your actions help keep our community safe and support our volunteers.

🚨 MICHELAGO RFS COMMUNITY UPDATE – 1 APRIL 🚨

Due to ongoing fuel supply issues, Michelago RFS has made the difficult decision to transition to more “economical” response vehicles. Effective immediately, crews will now be responding to incidents using:

• 2 x push bikes (with sirens zip-tied to the handlebars) 🚲

• 1 x ride-on mower for rapid grass fire response 🌱

• Kev’s horse (rated for off-road and flood crossings) 🐎

• The station wheelbarrow for equipment transport (please yield)

• And for major incidents — the highly trained relay team running in shifts

Members are reminded:
Please do not overtake the tanker… especially on hills
The bell on the lead bike is the official warning device
If you see crews pedalling uphill, words of encouragement are appreciated
ETA to incidents may vary depending on wind direction
We thank the community for your patience while we trial this new low-emissions response model.

The statutory Bush Fire Danger Period across the Snowy Monaro LGA, which includes our Brigade area, will end at midnight on the 31st of March 2026.

You no longer need an approved permit to burn, however you still need to notify the NSW RFS of your burning activities with at least 24 hours notice.

You also need to notify your immediate neighbours 24 hours in advance, not just rely on a community facebook post (which is also handy for the wider community).

To notify the NSW RFS of your upcoming burning activities, please visit
