SMOKE ALARMS..............

Did you know that you will not smell smoke while asleep? Only working smoke alarms save lives.

Test that your smoke alarm/s are working. If not, change the batteries or replace the alarm.
Check the smoke alarm is in date. Smoke alarms have a lifespan of ten years.
Give the smoke alarm a vacuum, if you haven't done so in the last six months, to remove dust and any insects.
To meet legislation you must have at least one working smoke alarm on each level of the home placed between bedrooms and living areas, it's the law. FRNSW also recommends having one in each bedroom. Hardwired and interconnected is best.

A hazard reduction burn is planned to be undertaken at Fletcher (Newcastle LGA) on Friday 14th August 2026
If you live nearby, please consider doing the following:
- Keep doors and windows closed to prevent smoke entering buildings.
- Outdoor items such as outdoor furniture, trampolines, playground equipment etc should be either taken inside or covered. Where this is not practical, items should be hosed down regularly to prevent ember damage.
- Retract plastic or synthetic pool covers to prevent ember damage
- Remove washing from clothes lines.
- Ensure any outdoor pets have a sheltered area.
- If you have asthma or a lung condition, reduce outdoor activities. If smoke levels are high and if shortness of breath or coughing develops, take your reliever medicine or seek medical advice.
- If you are driving a vehicle, slow down, keep windows up and turn headlights on.
Never fly drones or Remote Piloted Aircraft near bush fires or hazard reductions, where other aircraft may be operating. Penalties apply.

A smoke alarm that doesn't work is just a plastic disc on the ceiling.

Test yours every month. If it doesn't beep, replace the battery. If it's older than 10 years, replace the alarm.

KEEP A METRE FROM THE HEATER...................

Heaters need space. A lot of it.

Keep curtains, bedding, lounges, throws and drying racks at least one metre away.

Switch them off before you leave the room or go to bed. Never use outdoor heaters indoors.

Pulled the electric blanket out of the cupboard for the first cold night? Check it before you switch it on.

Look for frays, scorch marks, exposed wires or damage to the controller. If anything looks off, bin it.

Never fold one while it's on. Never sleep on it switched on.

Phones, laptops, e-bike batteries. They all generate heat while charging.

Charging on a bed, doona or pillow traps that heat against fabric. Lithium-ion fires can start fast.

Charge on a hard, flat surface. Keep batteries off bedding.

Fires in the kitchen are the leading cause of house fires in NSW. The cause is almost always the same. Unattended cooking.

If you have to leave the kitchen, turn the stove off. A hot pan only needs a minute.

Cold dinner beats a house fire.
