Dedicated educators are at the core of our training here at St John Great Southern, helping train the next generation of volunteers ๐Ÿ“–

We caught up with one such trainer Tony to ask his thoughts on his role within our team here in the Great Southern:

- What inspired you to pursue a role in volunteer development and training?

I have many years of experience as a volunteer in both hybrid and volunteer sub-centres. I have seen first-hand the significant difference that well-trained and confident volunteers can make within their communities. The training role provides me with an opportunity to share the knowledge, skills and experience I have gained throughout my own time as a volunteer. I am also able to pass on the valuable lessons I have learned from working alongside paramedic and volunteers.

- What do you enjoy most about helping volunteers build their skills and confidence?

It is essential to convey the reality that as a volunteer you are part of a diverse yet connected team and you are well supported. It is also necessary to demystify the often held perception that the role of ambulance officer is always confronting, instead it as much about communication and alleviating patients anxieties. It is very satisfying to watch volunteers grow from feeling unsure or hesitant into people who feel confident in the role.

- On World Trainer's Day, what message would you like to share with fellow trainers, mentors, and volunteers?

Understand that volunteering with St John Albany is the beginning of a journey. Volunteers play a pivotal role withing their communities, they come from a variety of backgrounds and everyone has something to offer. Stay within your scope of practice while building your clinical knowledge through on the job experience, reflecting on the jobs you attend and undertake self-directed learning as well as attending your regular training sessions. The most important message is: Do the Basics Well and Understand the Fundamentals.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the wonderful ladies of The Purlers knitting group for their generous donation.

For several years, The Purlers have lovingly knitted socks and sold them, which have raise funds generously passing the proceeds on to a variety of wonderful causes within the community.

We are incredibly grateful for their contribution, which has gone towards purchasing new infant manikins for our first aid training. These manikins will be used in both our local and regional training courses, helping us provide practical, hands-on learning for our first aid students.

Thank you to The Purlers, your kindness will help us continue to build confidence and lifesaving skills across our region.
