When it comes to flannel flowers, their survival is all about timing. ⏲️

Flannel seeds have a dormancy mechanism – they can survive for decades, underground, waiting for a bushfire.

Bushfire smoke sounds the wake-up alarm, but it's not until the rain arrives that flannel flowers will make their appearance. It may be years between blooms... but when conditions are right, flannel flowers bloom en masse.

Names:
Flannel flower (common)
Actinotus spp. (scientific)

Habitat:
Coastal heath, scrub, open dry eucalypt forests, sandy soils

Distribution: NSW, VIC, WA, NT, TAS, QLD

As a lethal bird flu spreads in Australian wildlife, it can be easy to think nothing can stop it. That’s an error – much can be done.

Thanks WIRES,
Any old towels? Please pass them on to wildlife carers. They need help for injured creatures - and it will be wonderful to pass them forward!
Thank you!

What to do / Bird Flu.

H5 bird flu is being closely monitored in Australia and we've been getting a few questions about what it means for wildlife.

While it's a serious disease, experts have been preparing for this and there are simple ways we can all help.

If you spot a sick or dead bird:
🐦 Avoid touching it
📸 Record what you see from a safe distance
📞 Report it to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline: 1800 675 888

Early reporting helps authorities track outbreaks and respond more quickly to protect wildlife. 💚

We've put together an FAQ guide covering the latest information here: https://wwf.org.au/blogs/avian-influenza-h5-bird-flu-frequently-asked-questions/

Today we’re celebrating National Tree Day 🌳

Trees are so much more than just a beautiful part of our landscape. They’re vital homes, shelters and food sources for countless animals from birds to bats, marsupials to reptiles, amphibians to tiny insects, that all rely on trees in their own unique way.

Take a look at the image 🔍 Each species you find depends on a tree in a different way.

How many species can you spot?

HINT: There are 13 different species and 17 animals hidden in this image. Can you find them all?
