Today is National Wildlife Day, a day to celebrate the furry, feathered, spiky and wonderfully wild animals that make our world so special!

Here at Trowunna, every day is wildlife day. From breeding threatened Tasmanian Devils and Quolls to rehabilitating wombats and helping native animals return to the wild, our team is always busy working to protect Tasmania’s incredible species.

National Wattle Day 🌱

Celebrated on 1st September, Wattle Day marks the beginning of spring and honours Australia’s national floral emblem.

At Trowunna, we’re proud to have both silver and black wattle growing throughout the sanctuary. These hardy native trees represent resilience, renewal and the beauty of the Australian landscape.

🦘👀 One of these things is not like the other...

Can you spot the imposter? 😄

Our resident handraised Bennetts Wallaby (Wallace) has decided he's a kangaroo today, happily blending in with the mob at feeding time. While he might think he's fooled everyone, we can still spot those shorter legs and cheeky face!

It's not unusual to see our free-ranging native animals sharing space around the sanctuary, and moments like this are a wonderful reminder of the unique wildlife that calls Trowunna home.

Watch your step... you never know who might be hiding beneath your feet! 👀

Echidnas are masters of disappearing. When they feel threatened, or even when they're just having a rest, they can dig themselves into the ground incredibly quickly, leaving only a carpet of sharp spines visible above the surface.

Their powerful front claws make light work of the soil, making them almost impossible for predators to move once they've anchored themselves in place.

So next time you're wandering around Trowunna, remember to keep an eye on the ground. That little mound of leaves or patch of spines might just be one of our prickly friends taking a well-earned break! 💛

🥔 The pouch potato has officially been evicted!

After months of enjoying the cosy, all-inclusive accommodation inside Mum Edna’s pouch, her growing baby has finally been kicked out!

While the pouch may now be off-limits, this little wombat will still stay close to Mum while learning how to explore the world on their own. Keep an eye out during your next visit, you may spot Edna’s adorable little shadow following close behind! 💚
