Monarto Safari Park is the largest safari park that will exist outside of Africa, spanning more than 1,000 hectares of fauna and flora and the only zoological park to be completely power neutral. Owned and operated by Zoos South Australia Monarto Safari Park opened in 1983 as a closed special purpose breeding facility. After officially opening to the public in October 1993, Monarto has evolved int

o a true biopark representing a unique blend of a conservation and zoological park. Its principle purpose is to provide a place for the conservation of Australian and exotic wildlife, public recreation and education. Monarto Safari Park is located 45 minutes (70 kilometres) from South Australia's capital city, Adelaide, and is the gateway to the picturesque Murraylands region. The park is open every day of the year from 9:30am to 5:00pm and focuses on African and Australian animals. The zoology and botany of these continents is reflected in the park’s major exhibits; Chimpanzee, Cheetah, African Painted Dog and Lion viewing platforms, Southern White Rhinoceros Boma viewing area, African Waterhole viewing platform and Yellow-footed Rock-wallaby walk-through exhibit.

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there, including first-time dad Anubis at Monarto Safari Park 🦌

Anubis has had a busy start to fatherhood, welcoming four Nyala calves with Margo, Mutomo, Bardo and Tornado over the past few weeks.

The two male and two female calves are settling in well, with the youngest still spending plenty of time tucked away in the scrub while the older calves are starting to follow their mums and explore more of the habitat.

The new arrivals are also an important part of Monarto Safari Park’s managed breeding program for Nyala.

If you’re visiting this weekend, keep an eye out from the boardwalk near the Africa giraffe habitat. You might spot one of the little ones emerging from the scrub.

Happiest of birthdays to the beautiful Myeisha! 🎂🦒

This leggy lady celebrated turning 26 earlier in the week and is now the oldest giraffe at Monarto Safari Park.

She was treated on her special day with a delicious fruit and veg 'cake' prepared by her keepers. 🥕

We'll be continuing the celebrations tomorrow for Father's Day with FREE entry for Dads when booked with a paying general admission ticket or member booking.

We're celebrating by inviting you to turn your old tech into conservation action on your next wild day out. ✨

Three years old, and their personalities are still very much on show 🦁🎂

The Lion Pride cubs celebrated their third birthday yesterday at Monarto Safari Park with some special enrichment from their keepers.

Mishindi was straight in, as usual, grabbing the orange box and making a quick getaway. He’s often the first of the group to investigate anything new.

Young male Bahati also joined the action, while Lela took a slightly different approach, ending up upside down and spinning beneath the cardboard. Kadija was never far away, standing alongside her siblings and keeping an eye on proceedings.

Mum Husani has raised all four, and three years on, each sibling has developed a very distinct personality of their own.

📸 Members, this is your final weekend to enter the Zoos SA Members Only Photo Competition!

And this year, there is an extra special reason to submit your favourite Monarto Safari Park shot.

We are proud to introduce the Geoff Brooks Award, recognising the best photograph taken at Monarto Safari Park.

For nearly three decades, Geoff has carried a camera with him across the park, capturing everything from giraffe births and lions to rhinos and countless unexpected wildlife moments.

It feels fitting that his passion for photography and Monarto will now be celebrated through the work of another photographer.

Members can enter up to 10 photos, with entries closing at 11.59pm ACST on Monday 31 August.

📸 Geoff Brooks’ Top 5: #1

And here it is. After nearly three decades behind the lens at Monarto Safari Park, Geoff Brooks’ favourite photograph is this beautiful image of Southern White Rhino calf Imani.

For Geoff, rhinos have always been much more than the “big grey blob” they can sometimes appear to be.

“I find them quite interesting to photograph, especially little calves, ’cause they never stop moving.”

Geoff remembers Imani racing around like rhino calves do, when suddenly she stopped and looked off into the distance.

“This was just a shot that I saw and I liked, of Imani looking off into the distance. There’s a little, little bum.”

A simple moment, but one that became Geoff’s favourite among the countless images he has captured over the years.

Today also marks Geoff’s final day at Monarto Safari Park after 26 years as a staff member, following several years volunteering before that.

Officially, Geoff has spent much of that time as our Team Leader Works. Although, looking back at the thousands of incredible images he’s captured over the years, we’re still not entirely convinced he wasn’t secretly employed as Monarto’s full-time photographer. 📸😂

From documenting births and conservation milestones to capturing the personalities and little moments of the animals in our care, Geoff’s photographs have helped tell the story of Monarto Safari Park for more than a quarter of a century.

Geoff, thank you for everything you’ve given to Monarto Safari Park, our animals, our people and our visitors over the past 26 years. We wish you all the very best for retirement. ❤️

Book Week has gone wild at Monarto Safari Park! 📖🐵

At yesterday’s Chimpanzee keeper talk, Team Supervisor of Primates Laura Hanley shared a very special story with Enzi, reading Zuri, the book she wrote about his older sister.

Zuri was the first Chimpanzee born at Monarto Safari Park and celebrated her 14th birthday just last week, making the timing of this story time pretty perfect.

Enzi seemed pretty interested in the familiar faces and story, proving that even chimpanzees can get into the Book Week spirit.

A pretty special way to celebrate one of our favourite weeks of the year. 📖🐾

📸 Geoff Brooks’ Top 5: #2

We’re getting close to number one in our countdown of Geoff Brooks’ favourite photographs, and today’s image captures a very special little chimpanzee.

This is Hope, just a few weeks old and being held by mum Hannah at Monarto Safari Park.

Hope has a special place in the park’s history as the first chimpanzee at Monarto to be named by renowned primatologist Dr Jane Goodall.

Geoff was walking out onto the viewing platform when he spotted the pair sitting close by. With Hannah’s back towards him and Hope in the perfect position, he captured a beautiful series of images through the wire.

“I’ve got a series of her yawning and then falling asleep.”

For Geoff, it was one of those quiet moments where everything came together.

“It was nice to be able to get that sort of clarity in an image.”

Happy African Painted Dog Day! 🐾

To celebrate this special species, the team at Monarto Safari Park treated the pack to a tasty carcass feed to encourage the dogs' natural teamwork and feeding behaviours, and filmed the action for us to share!

Highly intelligent, African Painted Dogs boast an incredible 80% hunting success rate and even “vote” with sneezes before a hunt!

Endangered in the wild, Zoos SA works with Painted Dog Conservation to protect populations and support anti-poaching efforts.
