y, we are known as Coast Guard Mooloolaba QF6. Our Coast Guard motto is “Safety by all Means” and our aims are to promote boating safety through education, experience and example and finally by search and rescue. We provide a 24 hour, 365 days a year Marine Rescue service for local recreational and commercial vessels, as well as to vessels visiting our area of operations. We operate four rescue vessels: "Mooloolaba Rotary Rescue", a 13.8 metre all-weather offshore rescue vessel, "Rotary III", a quick response 8.5 metre inshore rescue vessel, "Marine Rescue One" a 6.5 metre RIB and “Maroochy RSL” a 4.7 metre RIB. Each year we assist around 200 distressed vessels from local waters, accessed by this area’s only ‘all-weather’ ocean access. QF6 also maintains a 24/7 Marine Radio watch on all relevant channels, while providing a ‘Log-on, Log-off’ safety service for all mariners operating in this area. This system gives us an early warning of any overdue vessels, whether in transit or operating locally.

A Tinny Rescue

We received a call this morning from a 4.2 metre tinny, 200 metres off Pt Cartwright, with a motor that would not start.

Our vessel Rotary III, with skipper Matt T and crew of Dean C and David S, departed QF6 and soon had the vessel under tow back to the La Balsa ramp.

Inspection of the engine at the ramp showed a major electrical fire had occurred in the engine. Fortunately, it was shut down before fire could take hold.

The fire extinguisher was not used, but it shows the importance of carrying all the required safety equipment.

A very lucky skipper and a motor needing some serious repairs.

Old Woman Island Assist

On Monday afternoon we got a call from a 6 metre vessel at Old Woman Island that could not start its motor.

Rotary III, with skipper David N and crew of David S, Dean C and Matt S departed QF6 just after 1300 and arrived at the anchored vessel 30 minutes later.

The vessel had a flat battery, however, the starter key was also broken, so a tow back to Mooloolaba was the only option. The vessel was towed back over a tight and tricky bar due to a very low tide and active dredging operations.

A bonus for the skipper was that once safely back in the river, our crew got his engine started and fixed the ignition switch, so the owner was easily able to trailer his boat.

A great job all round by our crew.

2026-06-02. Tuesday afternoon at low tide. More than 1 month has elapsed since we last flew the drone over the harbour entrance. The weather in May has been terrible and this has impacted the dredger's ability to make progress. The bar and harbour approach remain challenging for visiting skippers in anything but ideal conditions.
