⏳ Racecourse Road, undated.

The tram model and Newmarket Station sign (with electric trains!) have us thinking 1920's –1930's. Any clues we’ve missed? 🔍👀

⏳The Caledonian Bakery on the Parade in Ascot Vale, circa 1890. Do you think they did a chocolate orange hot cross bun? Hopefully W. H. Mason had a better relationship with his son than he did his father, who, at age 70, took him to court for making him work 20 hour days, seven days a week, and then refusing to pay him.

On Monday night at Sam Merrifield Library, we welcomed award winning writer, academic and activist Tony Birch, who joined Bec Kavanagh in conversation about his latest book, 'Pictures of You'.

A huge thank you to Tony and Bec for an entertaining and insightful discussion, and to everyone who attended. We hope you enjoyed the evening as much as we did.

Scroll through to see a selection of books recommended by Tony, along with some of his own titles, all available to borrow from Moonee Valley Libraries.

⏳ All aboard for the Saltwater River. This tram has an ad for Leemings Boots -- while the ad looks quite traditional, Leemings also went in for more unusual ways to get their name out. One year, a horse was entered in a Melbourne Cup called 'Leemings Boots' -- it never showed up, but the name was published in all the guides. Later, Leemings' strange mascot 'Gazeka' (a frog-like creature with butterfly wings, and boots, of course) lent its name to another horse. Perhaps the gazeka wasn't depicted on this ad, as a complaint about one on the Kew tram declared it's near nudity "so rude".
