Happy World Environment Day! 🌏

Today, we celebrate the incredible natural environment that makes Douglas Shire such a special place to live, work and visit.

Douglas Shire is home to some of the world's most iconic natural environments, including the Daintree Rainforest, Great Barrier Reef, pristine waterways, beaches, wetlands and coastal ecosystems. These natural assets support our community, our lifestyle, our economy and our future.

At Douglas Shire Council, environmental sustainability is embedded across many areas of our work. From reducing waste and improving recycling outcomes to protecting waterways and supporting biodiversity, we are committed to helping preserve the unique environment we all enjoy.

Some of the initiatives Council supports include:
♻️ Waste reduction, recycling and resource recovery programs
📱 Recycle Mate app, helping residents recycle correctly and reduce contamination
🗑️ Community waste education and behaviour change programs
🔋 Battery recycling and other problem waste collection services
☕ Douglas Chooses to Reuse, reducing single-use cup waste across the Shire
🌱 Composting and food waste reduction initiatives, including Bokashi composting trials
🐔 School education programs, including waste reduction and composting projects
🎓 Environmental education resources, school incursions, excursions and community workshops
🌊 Water quality management programs that help protect local waterways and the Great Barrier Reef
🌿 Coastal rehabilitation and restoration projects that improve dune systems and strengthen natural resilience
🌳 Tree planting and revegetation projects to enhance biodiversity and habitat connectivity
🐠 Participation in Reef Guardian initiatives that promote stewardship of our Reef catchments
💧 Sustainable stormwater management and erosion control measures
🏞️ Natural area management and conservation activities across Council-managed land
🌾 Support for sustainable land management practices and environmental partnerships
🦋 Protection and enhancement of local biodiversity and native wildlife habitat
🚮 Community clean-up activities and litter prevention programs
📋 Strategic planning and environmental policy development that supports long-term sustainability outcomes
🤝 Partnerships with community groups, schools, businesses, Traditional Owners, government agencies and environmental organisations to achieve shared environmental goals

This World Environment Day, we thank the many residents, volunteers, community groups, schools and businesses who help care for Douglas Shire's environment every day.

Together, we can protect the places we love and ensure Douglas Shire remains one of the most environmentally significant and beautiful regions in the world for generations to come.

Small actions. Big impact. Every day.
