STATE BUDGET: The State Government has continued its significant investment in the Hills as part of the 2023-24 State Budget.
Importantly, the Treasurer has committed –
✅ An additional $100.8M for the new Mount Barker Hospital (bringing total project costs to $320.8M);
✅ $20M to complete several ambulance stations across the State, including the Mount Barker Ambulance Station;
✅ $40M to upgrade the intersection of Adelaide, Alexandrina, Wellington and Flaxley Roads (keeping in mind that the Adelaide Road Freeway interchange will also be upgraded, including the duplication of the Adelaide Road Bridge);
✅ $1M over two years towards design works for a new Brukunga Mine water treatment plant.
Further, the government has agreed to fund other programs important to the Hills including –
✅ $26.7M for an additional nine firefighting aircraft to enhance aerial firefighting capabilities (we have been strongly lobbying for this commitment);
✅ $0.46M per annum (indexed) from 2023-24 to increase mental health and wellbeing support to volunteer emergency services first responders;
✅ $31.1M over three years to extend the Electronic Medical Records Program across all regional Local Health Network hospitals;
✅ $23.5M for regional bus services;
✅ $10.2M to establish a Regional Skills Development Fund to ensure TAFE SA can offer more courses in regional South Australia.
There are now five major capital projects underway in Kavel supported by State, Federal and local government – the Mount Barker Hospital, the ambulance station, the Adelaide Road intersection and bridge duplication, the Mount Barker High School intersection upgrade and the Regional Aquatic Centre build.
