Earthstars start life as a small, rounded puffball just under the surface. As they mature, the tough outer skin splits into pointed “petals” that peel back and fold under the body — levering the whole fungus up off the ground and exposing the round spore sac in the centre. That neat little hole at the top (the peristome) is the business end: when a raindrop or a passing critter knocks the sac, it puffs out a smoky cloud of spores.

This one looks to be the collared earthstar (Geastrum triplex) — you can see the fleshy “saucer” cracked around the base of the spore sac, which is its giveaway feature.

A few things worth knowing:
🍄 They’re saprotrophs — they break down fallen leaves and wood, recycling the forest from the bottom up. A sign of healthy, living soil.
🍄 Not one for the table — earthstars are leathery and inedible, but completely harmless to handle and admire.
🍄 Some earthstars are little barometers, opening their arms in damp weather and curling them back in when it dries out.
