Hard waste drop off returns. Moorabool Shire residents - including renters - can drop off up to 2m3 of hard waste to one of our transfer stations at no cost when they show their rates notice or drivers license (renters only).

This is good news together with the recent update about green waste drop off in November. No excuse for not doing fire prevention tidying up.

If you see a Moorabool Councillor then congratulate them on the return of this initiative.

Check out the Moorabool Shire website for recycling opportunities as lots of items are free to drop off at the transfer stations.

🚗Drop-off can be in one trip (2m3) or two trips (2x1m3) and use is recorded by the transfer station operators. Volumes exceeding 2m3 will be charged as per transfer station fees.

Free green waste drop is back for Moorabool Shire for the month of November. This is a welcome return of a service that some people need to use to complete their fire prevention work.

By law, you must reduce your speed to a maximum of 40 km/h when driving past emergency, roadside assistance, or incident response vehicles.

This applies if they are displaying flashing lights, and are either parked or moving at less than 10 km/h.

Not all of our work involves an emergency. Sometimes we have time for a game of find the fire plug.

Our town has reticulated water and a system of about 30 fire plugs. It is essential that we know where they are located in case there is a house or vehicle fire and that they are operational.

We have highlighted before how it would help us to help you if the plugs are kept clear, visible and accessible with any fault like leakages are reported to Central Highlands Water.

Yesterday there were 2 that needed to be reclaimed from bullants and hosed out, one needed a good cut back of the surrounding shrubs and another had disappeared under grass. Yet another doesn't allow the hydrant to fit and has been reported and 2 were OK.

We were called out to a vehicle accident this afternoon with a possible person trapped. Luckily the driver was not seriously injured. The paged location of the incident turned out not to be the vehicle location so it took some time to find it.

Thank you to the Ballan Fire Brigade and Gordon Fire Brigade for turning out but they were not required. We assisted the police with slowing traffic while the car was removed by tow truck.

Please remember the road rules around emergency vehicles with lights flashing and slow to 40km/hr. Sometimes we place an emergency vehicles some distance from an incident for safety reasons, so take care and slow down because you don't know what is around the next corner.

Here is an important message. It is especially important if you have a safe phone for your own protection.

The Australian Government is launching AusAlert later this year, a new national warning system that will send emergency messages to all mobile devices (including tablets and smart watches) during disasters such as bushfires, severe weather and public health emergencies.

There will be an alert test on all these devices across Australia at 2pm on Monday 27 July 2026.

There will be an alert test on all these devices across Australia at 2pm on Monday 27 July 2026, plus early testing across certain areas in June.

In Victoria, this includes Geelong at 2pm tomorrow, Thursday 18 June.

If your devices are turned on, the AusAlert test will:

▪️make them vibrate
▪️play a loud siren-like sound for 10 seconds
▪️turn the screen on automatically

This may happen even if the volume is turned down or your devices are on silent or do not disturb.

AusAlert messages share important information aimed at keeping Australians safe during local and national disasters. However, they can also pose a potential risk for people in a domestic or family violence situation who may have a concealed safety phone as part of their safety planning, by making hidden safety devices easier to find.

People in this situation are encouraged to plan ahead by:

▪️giving the phone to a trusted friend or leaving it somewhere safe before 27 July.
▪️switching the phone to aeroplane mode or turning it off at least one hour before the testing and leaving it off for 24 hours.
