On Wednesday 10 December, Mount Gambier's longest-serving SES volunteer, Antonie (Tom) Poel, passed away at the age of 92.
Tom joined the unit in 1984 and, the following week, brought his son Simon along to also become a member. Simon’s daughter, Rebekah, later joined the unit, completing a remarkable three-generation legacy that will be long remembered.
Tom served as Unit Controller (now Unit Manager) from 1995 to 2000, before taking on the role of Unit Business Coordinator from 2000 until 2020. During his time as Unit Controller, Tom was a strong advocate for the unit, actively petitioning local councils for funding to support new vehicles, equipment, and the expansion of the Frew Park Headquarters. He also oversaw the significant transition from council-based funding to state government funding in 2000.
In 2000, Tom played a key role in securing the hosting rights for, and managing and staging, the National Road Crash Rescue Competition held in Mount Gambier.
In recognition of his outstanding contribution to the community, Tom was named Citizen of the Year by the Mount Gambier City Council as part of the 2002 Australia Day Awards. In 2021, he was further honoured with the Emergency Services Medal during a presentation at Government House.
Tom’s dedication, leadership, and commitment have left a lasting impact on the Mount Gambier and District SES Unit. His legacy will continue through the Tom Poel Award for Excellence, which acknowledges outstanding service to the Mount Gambier SES Unit.
Vale Tom Poel.
