Happy National Volunteer Week πŸ’›

Behind every toy on the shelf, every organised trolley, every new member welcomed through the door, and every exciting idea at Mount Hawthorn Toy Library… is a volunteer. πŸ’›

This National Volunteer Week, we’re celebrating the incredible women behind our committee: mums, professionals, leaders, organisers, educators, creatives, and community-builders. They all generously give their time to help create something special for local families.

From healthcare, education, wellbeing, business, finance and research… to late-night emails, toy cleaning, grant writing, balancing budgets, memberships, social media, events, repairs and opening shifts- our volunteers juggle a lot behind the scenes.

But what connects this team is a shared belief in community, connection, play, and giving children opportunities to learn, imagine and thrive.

Whether they’re passionate about sustainability, child development, inclusion, mental wellbeing, creativity, movement, family connection or learning through play, every committee member brings something unique to MHTL.

We’re so grateful for the time, heart, ideas and energy this team pours into our Toy Library community.

Thank you to our committee:
✨ Bonnie
✨ Christine
✨ Harsha
✨ Heather
✨ Hollie
✨ Linda
✨ Marie
✨ Monique
✨ Renee
✨ Zara

…and to every volunteer who helps make our Toy Library what it is.

🐠🌊🐟 The ocean has arrived at Mount Hawthorn Toy Library.

There is a whole under the sea haul in our collection including:
🐠 Two fish dress-ups because who doesn’t want to be a fish (even if that fish also mows the lawn)
🌊 Water table, outdoor water play for the warmer days we still have left
🐟 Fish rocker for the tiniest ocean explorers

Whether your child is deep in an ocean phase or you just want an excuse to set up the water table in the backyard this weekend, come in and grab one (or all three).

What this kind of play supports:
🌊 Sensory exploration & tactile development
🎭 Imaginative & dramatic play
🀝 Cooperative play and shared storytelling
πŸ’› Pure, unstructured fun

Plenty of sea themed options available to borrow now open Saturdays 9–11am at Mount Hawthorn Community Centre.

🌊 Balance beams, bricks, and a whole lot of wobbling.

Library loans are better when you mix and match and a wavy balance beam and the Kick Bricks obstacle course make a perfect pair. Set them up side by side and you’ve got a full indoor or outdoor movement course that kids will run through on repeat.

The Kick Bricks are soft, oversized foam bricks that kids can stack, arrange, kick through and rebuild, so the course looks different every single time. Add the balance beam and suddenly you have a genuine challenge on your hands.

What this kind of active play builds:
βš–οΈ Balance, coordination & core strength
🧠 Spatial planning & sequencing
🦡 Gross motor development
😀 Persistence β€” because they will absolutely want to do it again

Available to borrow Saturdays 9–11am at Mount Hawthorn Community Centre. πŸ’›

🚲 Two wheels, three wheels, and everything in between, we have got your child’s first ride covered.

We’ve just added two Kinderfeets balance bikes to the Mount Hawthorn Toy Library collection, and we’re pretty excited about it.

kinderfeets.australia are widely recommended as the perfect first bike, beautifully made, the right size for little riders, and genuinely built to last.

Here’s the best bit: we’ve set one up as a trike (three wheels, for early confidence and stability) and one as a classic balance bike (two wheels, for when they’re ready to really get moving). Same bike, two stages, so you can borrow whichever suits your child right now and come back for the next stage when they’re ready.

And when they grow out of those? We have a full selection of balance bikes and pedal trikes to keep the riding going:
🚲 Globber balance bike
🚲 FirstBike balance bike
πŸ›΅ Italtrike pedal trike (two available)

For all things about bike selection, learning to ride and helmets check out

What riding builds at every stage:
βš–οΈ Balance & core strength
🧠 Spatial awareness & confidence
🦡 Gross motor development & coordination
πŸ’ͺ The kind of outdoor independence kids absolutely love

A variety of bikes and ride ones available to borrow Saturdays 9–11am at the Mount Hawthorn Community Centre. πŸ’›

When toddlers making music is actually pleasant!! πŸ₯

We have a TambΓΊ at Mount Hawthorn Toy Library and it’s one of those instruments that just sounds really good. Deep, resonant drum tones that feel satisfying to play at any age.

Kids (and parents) don’t need to know anything about music to love this one. They just hit it and immediately want to hit it again.

What music play builds:
🎡 Rhythm & beat awareness
βœ‹ Fine motor skills & bilateral coordination
πŸ˜„ Self-expression & creativity
🀝 Turn-taking and group play

Available to borrow at the toy library! Open Saturdays 9–11am at Mount Hawthorn Community Centre.

Playtime just got a little more magical at Mount Hawthorn Toy Library ✨

Our Ze Mirror Animals set is a beautiful mix of fun, learning and imagination. Little ones can explore reflections, discover shapes and colours, and create their own silly or surprising animal combinations, all while building fine motor skills and curiosity.

It's one of those toys that grows with your child: perfect for tummy time, toddler play, and preschool storytelling.

What they're developing every time they play:
πŸͺž Visual perception & reflection awareness
🎨 Colour and shape recognition
βœ‹ Fine motor skills
🐯 Imaginative and creative play

Check out the video to see it in action!

🌬️ This one never fails to get a reaction

The Air Toobz is one of our most borrowed toys, and every single time a kid tries it for the first time they are hooked.

You connect the transparent tubes in any configuration you can think of, loops, swirls, under the table, across the room, switch on the kid-safe fan, and foam balls fly through the whole thing. High speed, low speed, all the balls at once. Even the little ones figure out quickly what to do (with parent help).

Here’s what’s going on developmentally every time they play:
πŸ”¬ Cause & effect- experiment, observe, adjust, repeat
🧩 Spatial reasoning & engineering thinking
🀲 Fine motor skills (connecting and reconfiguring the tubes)
🀝 Collaborative play - this one is genuinely better with two

Suitable from age 3, but honestly works across a really wide range and siblings of very different ages can play this together.

We have two sets to borrow from the Mount Hawthorn Toy Library.

Open Saturdays 9–11am

πŸ’ One zoo trip. One obsession. Many monkeys.

This family came in with a theme and we delivered. Their haul covered puzzles, imaginative play, storytelling, physical play and even a onesie.

Paired with a monkey book from home and of course a Wiggles theme song, and it's a great example of following your child's current interest across different types of play.

Got a theme of your own? Here are a few we can build a borrow around:
πŸ„ Farm – animals, vehicles, role play sets and books
🚜 Construction – diggers, blocks, hard hats and hi-vis
πŸ‘¨β€πŸ³ Little chef – play kitchens, food sets and pretend market gear
🦁 Jungle/safari – figurines, puzzles and storytelling props
πŸš€ Space – imaginative play sets, sensory and STEM toys
🐠 Ocean – sea creatures, water play and nature exploration

What's your kid into right now? Drop it in the comments and we'll see what we can put together. 🍌
