Spring is bringing more days to visit The Briars Nursery 🌱

The Nursery is now open Tuesday to Saturday every week.

That means more time to browse locally grown indigenous and native plants, chat with the Nursery team and find something for your garden.

We're excited to share that The Briars has been named a finalist in two categories of the 2026 Tidy Towns & Cities Sustainability Awards.

The Eastern Dwarf Galaxias Recovery Project is a finalist in the Environment category. Through work with Ecology Australia, the endangered eastern dwarf galaxias has increased from around 40 fish to more than 400 in a single breeding season.

The Ngawak Biik (Naa-wuk Beek) Junior Rangers Program is a finalist in the Indigenous Culture category. The program brings First Nations young people together to connect with culture and Country while learning about land management and environmental stewardship.

We're incredibly proud of everyone involved and the positive impact these programs are making.

Nursery closed this week 🌿

The Briars Nursery will be closed this week while some work is done to improve the paths around the nursery.

The upgrades will make it easier for visitors to get around when they visit.

Curious kids, wild adventures 🦎

Wildlife Eco Explorers is back at The Briars these September school holidays!

Kids aged 7–13 will spend three days exploring the outdoors, setting hidden wildlife cameras, dip netting, crushing ochre and building a native habitat box to take home.

New this spring 🌿 You can book a single day or join us for the full three-day program.

Help protect the wildlife we love 💚

As you may be aware aware, Avian flu (H5N1) has been confirmed on the Mornington Peninsula.

The Briars contains threatened fauna, wildlife, wetlands, migratory waterbirds, public access, education activities and volunteer programs, making it one of Council's highest priority conservation assets.

The Briars Wildlife Sanctuary remains open to visitors; however, additional biosecurity measures have been introduced to help protect the health and wellbeing of native wildlife.

How You Can Help

• Stay on designated walking tracks and boardwalks at all times.
• Do not approach, feed, touch or handle wildlife.
• Ensure children remain under close supervision.
• Use footwear disinfection stations where provided.
• Follow all temporary signage and directions from staff.
• Report any sick, injured or deceased wildlife to a staff member as soon as possible.
• Pets are not permitted within the Wildlife Sanctuary.

If you see a sick or dead bird, you can help by:

🚫 AVOID contact with sick or dead wild birds or wildlife and their environment.
📝 RECORD what you see, including, Location, Species, Number of animals affected and take photos 📷 if it’s safe to do so
📞 REPORT online or by calling the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.
