Large Animal Rescue Workshops

Large Animal Rescue Workshops Every large animal has the potential to become involved in an emergency incident that requires him to be rescued.

"Large Animal Rescue - moving a large animal from a place of danger to a place of safety, with overriding concern for the welfare of everyone involved and without causing injury or death to the casualty or rescuers" Large Animal Rescue awareness and information workshops have been developed for both industry (landholders, owners, event organisers) and agency (government, volunteer, community). Two

of the most common rescues anywhere in the world are of horses trapped in mud and incidents involving horse floats. Horses and large animals also fall down cliffs and into ditches and gullies. They stumble into sinkholes and septic tanks, get stuck in quicksand and can become caught in fire and trapped or washed away by floodwater. All workshop participants receive a copy of the book Equine Emergency Rescue. This book is a guide to the methods and tools necessary to successfully extricate a horse or other large animal from entrapment using low-tech, low-risk options that are easier, quicker and safer than extreme techniques using helicopters, cranes or 4WD vehicles that are sometimes seen on YouTube. When using the guidelines in this book, remember that, in general, the more elaborate the rescue, the
more risk to the rescuers and victim

If emergency responders who attend an incident involving large animals do not understand the animal or are unfamiliar with Large Animal Rescue techniques, you can show them step by-step instructions and reassure them that using these steps will increase their own safety and that of your animal.

Large Animal Rescue Information Workshop
Friday 4th June

We had a wonderful group of people attend Friday's workshop at Mount White with representatives from RSPCA NSW (Sydney and Southern regions), Local Land Services (Greater Sydney LLS) , WIRES (Central Coast), Animal Welfare League NSW (AWL), Fire + Rescue NSW (Berowra 75 Heavy Rescue), Rural Fire Service (RFS Mangrove Mountain) and Newcastle Equine Centre veterinarians.

Everyone had the opportunity to work together around the horse mannequin (kindly provided by NSW SES) and practice working within safe zones along with various slinging, sliding and manoeuvring techniques. Unfortunately due a hiccup with our mannequin, we were limited on some of the techniques that we were able to practice but this did nothing to dampen everyone's enthusiasm.

Through the generous donations received from our supporters PacFire Australia, PetStock and CattleClobber, participants were also lucky enough to receive a little something extra to supplement their equipment. One lucky person walked away with a White R5 Rescue Helmet (courtesy of PacFire). Two people received a Quick Release Equine Halter (courtesy of Equine Emergency Rescue) whilst another two received a webbing Horse Halter (courtesy of PetStock). We had four people that received Small Animal Halters suitable for use with
goats, sheep, alpacas, miniature horses (courtesy of CattleClobber.com.au) AND almost everyone was able to walk away with a 3m lead rope (courtesy of PetStock).

All of this could not have been achieved without the generosity of Krissy and Heath Harris who kindly allowed us to utilise their beautiful property and facilities at Mount White.

Lunch and refreshments were provided with the support of Subway (Berowra) and Woolworths and EVERYONE received a copy of the book Equine Emergency Rescue - A Guide to Large Animal Rescue.

We are waiting to confirm another workshop in the Central Coast area around October so if you know anyone who may want to attend this workshop or would like to organise one in your area, contact MaryAnne Leighton
