Last night as part of our regular drills, we teamed up with members of NSW RFS - Mudgee Headquarters Brigade and conducted a drill based on roles at a structure fire.

No matter if these types of fire are in a Fire + Rescue area or an RFS Area, our crews work closely together to help each other out, with firefighter safety one of our key responsibilities.

At last nights drill we used the RFS training facilty with an initial Fire and Rescue NSW Station 387 Mudgee crew in Breathing Apparatus entering the smoke filled “house” and conducting a search and rescue for a trapped resident.

Upon locating the resident, we then dragged them to safety from the house before a second RFS crew in BA to conduct a secondary search and extinguish the fire.

We also explained to RFS members the Fire+Rescue decontamination process known as WEPRO+ which is used to decontaminate all firefighters at every fire. This involves a number of cleaning stations to ensure the risk to all individuals is at it lowest possible.

We also demonstrated to the RFS members the “mayday” drag which is the quickest and most effective way to remove an unconscious firefighter from their PPE and BA if chest compressions area required.

We thank NSW RFS - Mudgee Headquarters Brigade for the use of their training ground and for the pre-drill sausage and onion bread rolls!

A big shout out to the families in White Circle.

Yesterday as part of Smoke Alarm Action Day our crews door knocked over 100 homes in the area to help people with checking the operation of their smoke alarm.

Our crews talked residents through how a simple 3 second push button check to make sure that it is working could save a life whilst replacing a number of batteries and even installed some smoke alarms.

If we missed you or you would like a free home fire safety check from our crews jump onto our website and book one in. If needed we will even install a free smoke alarm.

June 1 marks the first day of winter and Smoke Alarm Action Day, a national initiative highlighting the importance of detectors that protect you and your loved ones.

A smoke alarm’s loud beeping is the first line of defence in a fire, providing valuable time for residents to escape and call emergency services.

However, in 45 per cent of the nearly 3900 residential fires FRNSW attended last year, firefighters could not identify a working smoke alarm.

FRNSW is also encouraging members of the public to book a free fire safety visit at www.fire.nsw.gov.au/visits to help safeguard their homes.

Tomorrow is Smoke Alarm Action Day right across Australia to coincide with the first day of winter.

Did you know that smoke alarms only have a lifespan of 10 years, no mater how old the battery is ?

Smoke alarms will either have a "replace by" or a "manufactured on" type date somewhere on the label.

Make tomorrow the day you test your smoke alarm is working.

Key winter advise from Fire and Rescue NSW for winter is
• To test a smoke alarm, press the button on the disk face of the device. If you can’t reach it, use a broom to press the button.

• FRNSW’s free home safety visit program is available for all NSW residents.

• Smoke alarms must be replaced every 10 years, even if they seem to be working.

• If your smoke alarm is yellow in colour, it’s a good sign it needs replacing.

• Smoke alarms should also be cleaned every six months, by wiping the face of the device with a cloth.

• Legislation requires people to have at least one working smoke alarm on every level of the home, placed between the kitchen and sleeping/living areas.

• If you’re renting, and you don’t have working smoke alarms installed, contact your landlord or real estate agency immediately. They have a legal obligation to ensure you have working smoke alarms in rental properties.

• Never throw water onto an oil-based kitchen fire. It will flare up. The most effective way to put out a kitchen blaze is with an extinguisher or fire blanket. ‘Keep looking while cooking.

• Most home fires start in the kitchen. 37% of the 3884 residential fires in 2025.

• Keep flammable materials ‘at least a metre from the heater.

• Do not bring outdoor heaters or cookers inside. The carbon monoxide gas can kill in confined spaces.

Just after 1:30 pm on Friday specialist crews from Fire and Rescue Mudgee were responded to assist with an MVA at Mudgee Police station.

Upon arrival crews were faced with a vehicle that had made contact with the front of the police station.

Due to the vehicle carrying unknown substances in the rear of the vehicle firefighters in breathing apparatus with specialist hazardous materials equipment completed initial assessments for sources of fire, chemical spillages and structural integrity.

An exclusion zone was setup around the vehicle and the front of the police station to allow monitoring to occur.

Once the all clear was given by specialist HAZMAT crews recovery of the vehicle and repairs to the police station were commenced.

If you're into pushing buttons, make this the most important button you can press.

Last year, nearly half the homes damaged or destroyed by fire in NSW did not have a working smoke alarm!

Be smart and take part in Smoke Alarm Action Day, and test your smoke alarm works!

A working smoke alarm is your best early warning sign of a fire, giving you and your loved ones the chance to get out, stay out, and call Triple Zero (000).

Have you seen our Firefighters door knocking in parts of Mudgee ?

We're out doing our home safety visits, which can assist in helping you reduce the risk of an accidental fire in the home and safely escape in the event of a fire.

So far during May we've already knocked on over 250 doors in Mudgee.

The risk of a fatality in a home fire is halved if there is a working smoke alarm in a residential dwelling.
