🚒 Today, two crews from our brigade are joining several other Gold Coast brigades for a day of area familiarisation around Hinze Dam.

The activity provides firefighters with the opportunity to explore local fire trails, access tracks, water points, and key areas that may be used during future emergency incidents.

Knowing the terrain before an incident occurs is a critical part of effective firefighting. Familiarity with local access routes and operational challenges helps crews respond more effectively and safely when the need arises.

A great day of training, collaboration, and local knowledge sharing across the Gold Coast Group.

🔥 It’s National Volunteer Week, and this week our station was buzzing with activity as multiple local brigades came together for a large training night at our fire station.

We were proud to host members from Currumbin Valley Rural Fire Brigade, Gilston/Advancetown Rural Fire Brigade and Mudgeeraba Rural Fire Brigade, with more than 50 volunteers on location across the evening.

Training activities included practical fire extinguisher training, along with a live demonstration highlighting the ineffective use of direct water pressure on fuel fires, reinforcing the importance of using the correct firefighting techniques and extinguishing methods for different fire types.

At the same time, our newest recruit cohort undertook drafting training, a vital firefighting technique used to extract water from static sources such as dams, rivers, and swimming pools when hydrants aren’t available.

We also rolled out the Bushfire Model kit to run tabletop scenarios and discuss tactics and incident response strategies in a controlled environment.

It was a very busy station and fantastic to see multiple training sessions being conducted simultaneously, all driven by volunteers giving up their time to strengthen skills, build capability, and support their communities.

We’re continuing to highlight the leadership team and today we’re proud to highlight Phil Foster in his role as First Officer.

Since joining the brigade in 2016, Phil has played an important role in strengthening the brigade’s operational capability, with a strong focus on leadership, mentoring, and building a confident and capable team environment.

As First Officer, Phil oversees the brigade’s operational readiness and emergency response, helping ensure our members are trained, prepared, and ready to support the community when needed most.

Outside the brigade, Phil brings extensive experience in business leadership, land management, and fire mitigation, adding valuable practical knowledge to the role.

Simon is one of the brigade’s longest serving members, bringing more than two decades of experience, leadership, and commitment to Bonogin Valley Rural Fire Brigade. Over the years, he has played an important role in supporting brigade operations, mentoring members, and helping shape the strong culture that exists within the team today.

🔥 Planning on burning off around your property?

Before you light up, make sure you call the FireCom Burn Line on 1800 689 958 to register your burn.

Even small, well-managed fires can produce smoke that may cause concerned neighbours to call 000. By notifying FireCom beforehand, emergency services can confirm the burn is controlled and avoid unnecessary callouts.

Registering your burn helps:
✅ Prevent unnecessary emergency responses
✅ Keep local crews available for genuine incidents
✅ Reduce disruption to the community

⚠️ Reminder:
This process only applies to burns *under 2 metres* in size.

We’re continuing to introduce our leadership team following the recent AGM, and today we’re proud to highlight Dan Cridland in his role as Third Officer and Fire Warden.

Dan brings a wealth of experience to the brigade, with a long history in firefighting and a calm, practical approach to leadership. In his role, he plays a key part in supporting brigade operations, training, and overall crew readiness.

As our local Fire Warden, Dan also works closely with the community, helping residents manage fire safely, providing guidance on hazard reduction, and ensuring burns are carried out responsibly.

We’re pleased to introduce a new addition to our leadership team following the recent AGM, welcoming Daniel Hocking in his role as Fifth Officer.

Dan brings a valuable combination of operational experience, local knowledge, and leadership. Having lived in the Bonogin and Mudgeeraba area for decades, he has a deep understanding of the landscape and community, which plays an important role in how we prepare for and respond to incidents.

In addition to his frontline role, Dan leads our mitigation efforts, helping reduce risk across the area through planning, preparation, and practical on-ground work. His background as a civil engineer, along with his time in the military, adds further strength to the skillset he brings to the brigade.
