Smart burn piles 🍂

Creating burn piles is a practical way to manage green waste in rural and semi-rural parts of the Perth Hills, but without care they can unintentionally harm wildlife such as quendas, echidnas and reptiles that shelter in leaf litter and branches.

Tips for creating safe burn piles:
🍂Build and burn on the same day, preventing animals from settling in.
🧹If a pile has been sitting, gently rake it apart just before burning to encourage wildlife to move out.
🔥For larger or older piles use a staged “small fire” approach, burning material gradually from one edge.
📏Keep piles within 1 metre squared and maintain a cleared three metre buffer.

We are currently in an unrestricted burning period, remember to practice safe burning 👉 https://buff.ly/haoRyjV

Where possible, consider alternatives such as mulching, green waste or FOGO bins, or creating habitat piles in safe areas.

Working Together to Respect and Protect Cultural Heritage

Our Major Capital Projects team commits to working alongside our Aboriginal Advisory Group and local Elders, particularly where cultural heritage is involved.

Engaging early and listening to their knowledge, perspectives and guidance is an important part of how we plan and deliver our projects. This collaboration helps ensure outcomes that respect and celebrate cultural values, while strengthening the connection between people, place and community.

Through the Brown Park Masterplan, we’ve been working closely with the group to seek their advice and input on how we can acknowledge and respect the cultural significance of the site, particularly key features like the creek.

We’re grateful for the ongoing support and insight from the group and look forward to continuing learning and working with them.
