Murtoa is 300 kilometres northwest of Melbourne and 30 kilometres from the regional city of Horsham. Our students come from the small surrounding towns of Rupanyup, Glenorchy and Minyip. Students also travel from Horsham. Murtoa College was formed by the amalgamation of Murtoa Primary School and Murtoa Secondary College in 2003. The College has around 300 students, with combined primary classes an

d at least two classes in each year level in our secondary section. Our College has beautiful grounds featuring mosaics and garden areas that our students have designed and maintain. Our large site features many innovations including drought-tolerant gardens which have won statewide recognition, mosaics which reflect the college values, a wind generator that has the capacity to power the whole school and environmentally-conscious buildings.

|| SPORT | Junior Footy ||

On Wednesday 27th the year 7 and 8 students travelled to City oval to compete in the inter school football carnival. The students competed against Dimboola in the first game of the day, with limited numbers the boys came out to a hot start scoring the first goal of the game.

After a tightly contested game the quick running Dimboola pulled away to take the win. Game 2 seen the students compete against Edenhope, the students came out firing and showed their skills from start to finish and came away with the win. Game 3 seen MC up against Nhill for the final game. The game was swinging back and forth throughout the first half. Throughout the second half the boys dug deep and showed that they weren’t going down without a contest kicking multiple goals to come away with win.

The students displayed great skills throughout the day and played well. Thank you also goes to the opposition players who helped out to fill the side as well.

FOOTBALL
Eight Year 9 and 10 students travelled to Horsham to take on Nhill. While it was disappointing that more teams were not involved on the day, it was great for the boys to have the opportunity to play a game together.

The boys made a slow start, with Nhill kicking the first two goals within the opening two minutes. Murtoa responded strongly, kicking the next three goals to fight their way back into the contest. The game remained evenly matched throughout all four quarters.

With just three minutes remaining in the final quarter, Murtoa held a 10-point lead. Unfortunately, Nhill finished strongly, kicking two late goals to secure a narrow two-point victory. Final scores were Murtoa College 13.2 (80) to Nhill 12.10 (82).

A big thank you to Nhill for lending us two players to help fill positions. Well done to the Murtoa students, whose behaviour, effort, and attitude throughout the day were outstanding.

NETBALL
Congratulations to Leah, Lyra, Sienna, Lyla, Miley, Molly, Ruby, Holley and Loz who played netball against Nhill College on Tuesday 19th May, at Horsham City Oval.

Unfortunately, we were the only schools participating. The girls played a full game – 4x15 minute quarters, displaying excellent game play, many intercepts and accurate goal shooting. I was proud of the way the girls represented our school with such positive behaviour and great sportsmanship. A great day was had by both schools.

|| SPORT | Senior Netball ||

The Senior Girls Netball team represented Murtoa College with great effort and teamwork across all three games at the recent inter-school sports.

In their opening match against St Brigid's College, the girls fought hard in a close contest, with only four points separating the teams at half time. The team showed strong determination and worked tirelessly throughout the game.

The second match against Horsham College was played at a lightning-fast pace, with the girls continuing to show excellent teamwork and resilience backing up straight after the first game.

The final game against Marian College saw the team finish the day strongly with a fantastic 17–14 win. Well done to Georgie McQueen and Shanyka Penny-Roberts for their exceptional shooting in the final game, helping secure the victory. A special thank you also to Marli Arnold for coaching the girls through the drills and supporting the team throughout the day.

|| SPORT | Senior Boys Football ||

On Friday the 15th of May, we travelled to Stawell for the Senior Boys Football competition. It was fantastic to see St. Brigid’s and Murtoa combine to form one team, giving students from both schools the opportunity to play together. The boys worked well together on the field and showed great teamwork and sportsmanship throughout the day.

The team played four shortened matches against Marion, Horsham, Hopetoun, and Stawell. Although the results did not go our way, with our only win coming against Marion, it was wonderful to see the boys enjoying themselves, supporting one another, and making the most of the experience. Overall, it was a great day of football and teamwork for everyone involved.

|| CLASSES | Year 7 Volleyball ||

Our Year 7 students recently completed the second of two specialist volleyball sessions with guest coach David Berry as part of their Volleyball unit in Physical Education.

David put students through their paces, helping them develop and refine their volleyball skills and techniques in a fun, engaging and supportive environment. Students demonstrated excellent enthusiasm and willingness to challenge themselves while learning the fundamentals of the sport.

We are very grateful to Dave for the time and effort he dedicated to guiding and encouraging our students to participate in this highly inclusive sport, particularly with the upcoming Black Ranges Volleyball competition later in the year.

After visiting schools across the region and observing student skill levels, David commented that our students are shaping up to be very competitive in the competition.

Students who are interested in continuing to develop their volleyball skills are also welcome to join the Horsham domestic volleyball competition, held on Mondays from 4:30pm at St Brigid’s College Stadium.

Student feedback from the sessions was overwhelmingly positive, with Cooper Shaw summing up the experience perfectly:

“That was the best lesson I have ever had.”
