Today is 1 year since my mum Jenni died.

Some do say 'pass away' but just like life, death is a reality we all experience and eventually face ourselves. So I call it what it is on this day.

In her last weeks because of the cancer growing in her brain she could not remember our names or eventually even speak, but she knew she loved us and we loved her.

In the lead up to and following her death I have certainly seen the best and worst in others, and also in myself.

Jenni lost her father at 15, became an umarried single mum at 20, lost her mum at 21, and then at 31 my brother Kurt was taken from her in a bycycle accident.

Her experience showed me grief is a daily, weekly, monthly and yearly thing. Sometimes certain dates in the calendar make it a bit challenging, but she lived with it, it never went away...It's not something you 'get over'. Grief follows us not just in those we have lost, but also the friends, the relationships and things we could/should have done better..or not.

Today I can only say I miss her - She really backed me 100% and never let me down, even when I fell short.

So today if you happen to read this, I can only say, hug the ones you love and look the world right in the eye. You will always be suprised with what you can do and what you can live with.

Love you mum ❤️

“River level rises area expected across the flood watch area with the forecast rainfall and areas of minor flooding may develop from Monday evening.”

On behalf of the Tweed Shire Community I extended our deepest condolences to our family in the Ballina Shire who are feeling the weight of this tragic loss.

We pay tribute to those heroes from Marine Rescue Ballina who sadly lost their lives trying to save another.

Our community stands with the survivors, families, friends and our local Marine Rescue volunteers who have been devastated by the tragedy in Ballina.

As your MP, on behalf of our community, I laid a wreath at the site with NSW Minister for Emergency Services Jihad Dib, Tweed Shire Deputy Mayor Reece Byrnes and Ballina Shire Mayor Sharon Cadwallader.

Every day, emergency services personnel are the first to rush to the rescue of people in danger across the North Coast.

Earlier this week, a crew of six Marine Rescue volunteers went out in difficult and dark conditions to do exactly that.

Two brave heroes made the ultimate sacrifice. Their dedication and commitment must always be remembered.

Three families have experienced a terrible loss and our community shares their grief.

My heart breaks for everyone affected, in particular the loved ones of those involved.

I also wish to pay tribute to the bravery of those who responded to the tragedy.
