Fires in the kitchen are the leading cause of house fires in NSW. The cause is almost always the same: unattended cooking.

If you have to leave the kitchen, turn the stove off. A hot pan only needs a minute. A cold dinner beats a house fire.

Be fire safe this winter.

A smoke alarm that doesn't work is just a plastic disc on the ceiling.

Test yours every month. If it doesn't beep, replace the battery.

If it's older than 10 years, replace the alarm.

Be fire safe this winter.

Today is St Florian’s Day – International Firefighters’ Day.

It’s a time to recognise and thank all firefighters for their bravery, commitment, and service to our communities.

To our own brigade members—and to every member of the RFS across the state and beyond—thank you.
Your dedication to protecting lives, property, and the environment, no matter the conditions, is something we are incredibly proud of.

From bushfires to floods and everything in between, you turn up when it matters most.
We’re honoured to stand beside you—not just today, but every day.

Detectives attached to the Rural Crime Prevention Team are appealing for information following a series of recent grass fires in the Hunter Valley.

Between Monday 2 March 2026 and Friday 24 April 2026, a total of 24 grass fires have been reported in areas surrounding Singleton.

The fires have occurred along the Golden Highway at Warkworth, and Mitchell Line of Road, Jerrys Plains Road, and Putty Road at Mount Thorley.

Of the 24 fires, 17 have been classified as suspicious or the cause undetermined; and occurred on weekdays between 12pm and 5pm.

Due to the extremely dry conditions, police and firefighters warn there is a significant risk of a major fire that could impact local homes, businesses and the broader community.

Hunter Valley Police District Crime Manager, Detective Inspector Andrew Wheatley, said the pattern of fires is concerning.

“The frequency, timing and locations of these fires raise serious concerns, particularly given how dry the conditions are across the Hunter Valley,” Det Insp Wheatley said.

“A fire under these conditions has the potential to spread rapidly and place lives, property and emergency services personnel at risk.”

Detective Inspector Wheatley said investigators are urging anyone who was travelling through the affected areas to assist.

“We are specifically asking motorists who were in these locations between midday and 5pm on weekdays to review any dashcam footage they may have,” he said.

“Even something that might seem insignificant – such as a vehicle pulled over or a person behaving unusually – could be critical to our investigation.”

Hunter Valley Police are working closely with the NSW Rural Fire Service and are appealing to residents and road users to report any suspicious behaviour.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Branxton Police Station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Information can be provided anonymously.

Another great part of being in the RFS is the support behind the scenes 👏

A huge thanks to Hunter Valley Catering for looking after our crews at the Camberwell HR last night. After a long shift on the fireground, a good feed goes a long way and it doesn’t go unnoticed.

It’s not just about fighting fires — it’s about the teamwork, community, and the people who step up to support each other when it counts.

Hunter Valley Catering are also currently looking for volunteers, so if you’re keen to get involved in a support role, jump over to their page and get in touch.

If you’ve ever thought about joining the RFS, now’s a great time. 🚒

🚒 Support Your Community – Join the Hunter Valley Support Brigade! 🚒

The NSW RFS is more than just firefighting—it’s a team effort. Our Support Brigade plays a crucial role behind the scenes, helping with logistics, transport, and bulk water operations.

Whether it’s moving supplies, delivering water to the fireground, or assisting during major incidents, Support Brigade members help keep everything running smoothly. During non-emergency times, our brigade also assists with truck movements for fleet servicing and delivering PPE to stations across the district.

No firefighting required—just a willingness to lend a hand when it’s needed most. It’s a great way to give back, learn new skills, and be part of a team making a real difference across the Hunter Valley.

📍 Keen to get involved? We’d love to hear from you!
