WORKING BEE CANCELLED - We are delighted to share that past parent and professional painter Gareth Simmonds has sourced paint and will donate his time to spray paint the internal pine frames of the kindergarten for us - this means we don’t need the extra hands to help on the 12th. Stay tuned for future ways you may be able to help rebuild our Community Kindergarten space. We love our community and the big hearts you all have. Happy Easter everyone.

KINDY UPDATE – MARCH 2026

We are incredibly excited to share some very special news with our community. The rebuild of our beloved Nambour Community Kindy at James Street has begun. You may have even noticed Accord Homes construction signs on the Kindy fence!

Following the devastating flooding in March 2025 there was a massive amount of work done by staff, parents and the community to save the Kindy after the flood. Having had the insurance claim knocked back, the Kindy team investigated options to move away from the Flood risks presented at James Street location. After 6 months of exploration, all the viable options to relocate were deemed not possible, which unfortunately coincided with the end of the school term.

The Kindy Committee made the tough decision to stand down the staff for 2026 and put more energies into rebuilding at James Street in a way that reduces the risk of future flooding. The Cr David Law and the Sunshine Coast Council supported us to work with a Flood Resilient Architect, who assessed the building and risk, and developed a design for the rebuild. The goal is that should the building flood again, we can hose it out, dry it out and reopen with the week.

Then, at a time when we needed it most, Darryl Argo, a local retired builder stepped forward and generously offered his time, knowledge and experience to help with this rebuild. Darryl has been working away prepping the building for construction work to commence. His support has been invaluable, and we are deeply grateful for the generosity and the amazing community-minded support he has shown the Kindy community.

We would also like to sincerely thank Mike Scarff and Antony Bowden from Accord Homes, who have come on board to carry out the rebuild. Their generosity, professionalism, and support are an incredible blessing on the Kindy community.

It’s amazing people like Cr David Law, Darryl, Antony and Mike that remind us how strong and compassionate our community truly is. Thank you for helping us give the Kindy back to the families of Nambour. Today, thanks to the kindness and generosity of some truly amazing people, we can announce the rebuild of James Street Kindy has begun with the hope to reopen in January 2027.

There is more work to be done to complete this process, so if you would like to get involved, here are some ideas, so please reach out.

- Working Bees. We will be holding weekend working bees in the coming months to complete certain tasks, to keep construction costs low (eg. Painting and cleaning). These will be advertised, but let us know if this interests you

- Discounted Construction work/supplies. If you have a company and would like to donate some of you or your staff hours or materials. Please let us know.

- Fundraising. We have not yet met our funding targets for the rebuild and will plan to hold some fundraising efforts in the coming months. If this is something you could help support, we would love your help

Thanks for following along with the journey, and your commitment to not see James Street Nambour Kindy close.

We are saddened to share that our community kindy will close for the 2026 year. This has been a difficult decision, especially as the kindy has been part of our community for more than 75 years.

We are actively working toward a solution that will allow us to reopen in 2027, and we will keep families and supporters updated as plans progress.

Thank you for your continued support during this time.

We are appealing to the Minister of Education and the Arts, John-Paul Langbroek MP to support that a not-for profit community kindergarten impacted by a natural disaster should be afforded the opportunity to move into a community supported underutilised government building at Nambour State College (a plan the school community and administration also support) to afford the time to connect with experts to re-build our community centre to continue to support families in Nambour. There is precedence in the Brisbane suburb of Craigslea.

To be told the reason we are denied the option is because the loss of our centre would have little impact due to the number of child care centres already in our community. Ignoring the fact that our centre that is owned by this community that has consistently demonstrated exceeding the National Quality Standards and been a part of this community for 75 years over assumptions is not acceptable. The community of Nambour deserves better than this. We need your help to partner with us in making sure that choice for families continues to be available now and in the future.
