Rescue work, is a journey of continuous improvement. Last night, we were fortunate to receive new equipment from our specialist response officer, designed to enhance patient outcomes. This equipment with the technique is a first for CFA. The Tie-Back allows for better access to trapped patients in motor vehicle accidents allowing for better extraction, meaning for a faster response to hospital for those injured.

Tonight, clocks revert one hour back. Dedicate a few moments to adjusting the oven clock and consulting the microwave manual for the clock. Other devices should update automatically.

Most critically, ensure the smoke alarm battery is replaced if needed.

Wishing you a Happy Easter 🐣

Osborne Edward John Cockatoo 16th February 1983

The horrendous events of 16th February 1983 – the day that was to become known as Ash Wednesday – can never be overstated.

Those who lived through those fires will have the monumental experience seared into their memories – the intense heat of the morning giving rise to winds in the afternoon, and by evening, fires sweeping across the State causing chaos, confusion and intense fear for those whose lives were suddenly placed in danger.

Brigades swung into action and firefighters across the State placed their own lives in danger to try and control the fires but as day passed into evening, they knew they were facing an immense battle.

It was a battle that would take the lives of many, including Osborne Edward “Eddie” John Lowen, who died that day while fighting the Cockatoo fires in the Dandenong Ranges.

All firefighters fear wind changes which can suddenly cause fires to move in unpredictable directions. And for Osborne – and other firefighters that day - this danger became reality.

He was in the Nar Nar Goon Van support truck at Cockatoo when the wind swung around, trapping the truck and engulfing it in flames.

Tragically, Eddie died.

Osborne Lowen was a member of the Nar Nar Goon Rural Fire Brigade. He will always be remembered for his bravery and commitment in the face of almost insurmountable odds that day, supporting our brigade to protect the lives and property of others, and paying the ultimate price in the process.

The brigade pays tribute to his bravery, his service and the sacrifice he made during one of Victoria’s worst fires in history.

Eddies Seat, has been a 3 year project of the brigade to remember Osborne Edward John Lowen who was tragically killed in the Ash Wednesday Fires 1983. Eddies seat is now in position in Wrights Forrest Cockatoo where he was tragically taken. The seat is a place for remembering, reflecting and also resting.

The brigade would like to thank Parks Victoria in particularly Jack for allowing us to have the seat to remember Eddie but also their support to make it happen.

We would also like to acknowledge the hard work of Cardinia Engineering who designed, made and helped install the seat today.

The Brigade will hold a memorial ceremony on Monday night at 19:30 at the location of eddies seat - and everyone is welcome to attend.
