Severe Thunderstorm Warning for heavy to intense rainfall.
Issued: 9:09pm on Tuesday 24 February 2026.

Where:
For people in parts of parts of parts of Central, Mallee, North Central, North East, West and South Gippsland, East Gippsland and Northern Country Forecast Districts.

When:
A humid airmass is combining with the passage of a slow moving trough of low-pressure to generate severe thunderstorms this evening.

Situation:
VERY DANGEROUS THUNDERSTORMS are likely to produce intense rainfall that may lead to dangerous and life-threatening flash flooding over the next hour in parts of the Central, North Central, West and South Gippsland and North East districts. Locations which may be affected include Mt Baw Baw.

Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding over the next several hours in parts of the Mallee, North East, East Gippsland and Northern Country districts. Locations which may be affected include Mildura, Wodonga, Wangaratta and Robinvale.

Impacts:
- 24.2 mm was recorded at Redesdale in the 30 minutes to 7:30pm.
- 26.8 mm was recorded at Kyabram in the 30 minutes to 6:45pm.

What you should do:
The Victoria State Emergency Service advises that people should:

* If driving conditions are dangerous, safely pull over away from trees, drains, low-lying areas and floodwater. Avoid travel if possible.
* Stay safe by avoiding dangerous hazards, such as floodwater, mud, debris, damaged roads and fallen trees.
* Be aware - heat, fire or recent storms may make trees unstable and more likely to fall when it's windy or wet.
* Check that loose items, such as outdoor settings, umbrellas and trampolines are safely secured. Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
* Stay indoors and away from windows.
* If outdoors, move to a safe place indoors. Stay away from trees, drains, gutters, creeks and waterways.
* Stay away from fallen powerlines - always assume they are live.
* Be aware that in fire affected areas, rainfall run-off into waterways may contain debris such as ash, soil, trees and rocks. Heavy rainfall may also increase the potential for landslides and debris across roads.
* Stay informed: Monitor weather warnings, forecasts and river levels at the Bureau of Meteorology website, and warnings through VicEmergency website/app/hotline.

The next warning is due to be issued by 12:10am Wednesday.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Drouin, Warragul, Poowong and surrounds.
- Intense rainfall that may lead to dangerous and life-threatening flash flooding is likely.
- Very dangerous thunderstorms were detected near the area east of Pakenham and Bunyip at 3:55pm.
- This thunderstorm is moving towards the southeast.
- This Emergency Warning replaces the Emergency Warning issued at 3:44pm.

If you are located in Drouin, Warragul, Poowong and surrounds, you are in danger. You should immediately move indoors to stay safe.

Severe Weather Warning for heavy rainfall

Where:
For people in parts Central, North Central, West and South Gippsland and parts of East Gippsland, Northern Country, North East, Wimmera, Mallee and South West Forecast Districts.

When: Heavy rainfall extending into Gippsland, development possible over central this evening.

Situation:
Very high moisture links with a frontal system moving across the state today. Thunderstorms with heavy rainfall are extending eastwards into Gippsland into the Sale and Bairnsdale area this afternoon. Redevelopment of heavy rainfall remains possible through parts of Melbourne and central areas of the state this evening.

HEAVY RAINFALL which may lead to FLASH FLOODING is forecast for parts of central and eastern Victoria today, during the afternoon and evening. Six-hourly rainfall totals between 30 to 60 mm are possible, with higher falls to 70 mm about the ranges. Conditions are expected to ease during Wednesday morning.

Six-hourly rainfall totals between 30 to 60 mm are possible, with higher falls to 70 mm about the ranges. Conditions are expected to ease during Wednesday morning. 🌳 Outdoors: Head indoors quickly. Avoid trees, drains, creeks and waterways.
🚗 On the road: If conditions are dangerous, pull over safely away from trees and floodwater. Watch for debris, damaged roads and fallen branches. Delay travel if you can.
🧰 If you might be isolated: Have 3–5 days of essentials — food, water, medications and pet supplies.

It's going to get windy folks. In addition to the heat and fire risk, there is also a Severe Weather Warning issued for today, Friday 9 January, for damaging wind gusts across the state.

A forecast of the thunderstorm potential for today is also pictured below.

Take the time to check that loose items such as outdoor furniture, umbrellas and trampolines are safely secured. Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.

The Moe Unit wishes is sad to hear the of the passing of Jen Harnden.

The Moe Unit wishes our deepest condolences to Jens family and friends, Inverloch VICSES unit, Phillip Island VICSES unit as well as VICSES Region.

Jen was a very dedicated and knowledgeable SES volunteer and staff member and has played a massive part in what SES has become today. Jen was passionate about what she did and was an exceptional leader, trainer and mentor to a lot of fellow members to the Moe unit and surrounding units across the region. You will be missed 🧡
