Today is International Picnic Day, so we are sharing our wonderful collection of picnic pics! In the late 19th and early 20th centuries picnics were a popular social event in the community. Picnics were organised for workplaces, sporting clubs and church groups. Some picnics involved games such as the tug-of-war, while others were simply a social gathering. The Picnic Committee was usually responsible for the organisation of the picnic, including the location and activities, with popular locations being Toronto and Tomago. June has delivered some of our region's largest floods, so this Throwback Thursday we are sharing a series of images from the Maitland flood of June 1949. Prior to the levee being built, floods of the town and surrounding areas were a regular occurrence. These pics from our Newcastle Morning Herald Collection show the effects of the flood, as well as the clean up afterwards. Both of which seem to have been met with good-natured stoicism!
