Family Inclusion Strategies Hunter

Family Inclusion Strategies Hunter Family Inclusion Strategies Hunter is a group who have formed to promote family inclusion & improve outcomes for children and young people.

Family Inclusion Strategies Hunter (FISH) is a group of practitioners, parents, family members and carers who have formed to promote family inclusion in the lives of children in child protection and out of home care and family inclusive practice in the child protection and out of home care service system. Our mission is simple. We want better outcomes for children and young people in the child pro

tection system and in out of home care. FISH believes strongly that family inclusion will contribute to better outcomes, including higher rates of family preservation, restoration and improved family relationships and overall wellbeing for children in long term care. The voices and action of parents and family are needed to make this happen. FISH formed because we want the children and young people of the Hunter Valley of New South Wales in the child protection and out of home care systems to have better relationships with their families and for their families to be actively and respectfully included in their lives.

Today we remember. We honour. We commit.

On National Sorry Day, we pause to reflect on the strength and resilience of the Stolen Generations and acknowledge the ongoing challenges faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and communities.

While apologies recognise past wrongs, meaningful change requires ongoing, concrete action.

Apologies must be accompanied by sustained efforts to address imbalance - words translated into tangible improvements in the lives of First Nations peoples.

◾Over-Representation in Child Protection: As of September 2025, 4.5% of First Nations children were on care and protection orders, unchanged from the same time last year. In contrast, the rate for non-Indigenous children declined from 0.5 to 0.4% during this period. (DCJ)

◾Family Violence: In 2023-24, Indigenous women aged 15 and over were 27 times more likely to be hospitalised due to family violence than non-Indigenous women. (AIHW)

◾Child Safety Concerns: Indigenous children are over-represented in areas where child safety and security are compromised, experiencing higher rates of hospitalisations and deaths due to injury compared to their non-Indigenous peers.

These figures underscore the necessity for systemic reforms and community-led initiatives.

For Aboriginal children and young people, sorry means listening, and action toward systemic change.

Calls for Change -
Our calls for change series highlights some of the ways the system can better support both parents and children holistically.

"This time" is the title of FIN and Micah Projects' joint submission (29th March 2026) in which FIN parent voices join the voices of many people who have accessed Micah Projects services over the past 30 years. These voices have asked for family support that is early and ongoing, practical, and flexible. This submission lists 25 recommendations for supporting families through life's peaks and troughs, wherever and whenever they seek it.

2. Parents highlight some of the key priorities to them are receiving support early and being linked with the appropriate resources.
