The Question of Freedom
At the end of 2021, “Freedom” was the catch-cry of demonstrations and marches around Australia. This call for freedom is based on the rights of the individual. Individual rights are one concept of freedom that is constantly pushed on us by mainstream media and the ruling elite. They encourage us to think it is the only freedom we should consider. It is a very powerful tool.
The ruling elites and mainstream media have manipulated the ideal of FREEDOM for so long that we only understand it as loose set of ideas such as ‘individual freedom to choose’, or ‘freedom is the central value of civilization’, or ‘ freedom is our democracy’, or ‘freedom is our way of life’, but in these notions there is nothing concrete about what constitutes FREEDOM for me and you. The word is used in so many ways to control the way we think. David Harvey describes it like this “The word ‘freedom’ resonates so widely …that it becomes a button that elites can press to open the door to the masses to justify almost anything”.
However, there is another way to want Freedom. It’s much bigger than a catch-cry, than a single demand. To grow as individuals and be truly free, we must be free of exploitation and free from living in a world where profits are in command. When we want for nothing, and we are free from worrying about our mortgage, and bills then we can begin to be free. This can only be achieved when we are all free from poverty and from the exploitation of Capital.
The FREEDOM we really need, is the freedom to develop a new society based on equality, independence, peace, solidarity and the common good for all and these are the real values that are embodied in the ideal of freedom.
Socialists are not opposed to individual freedoms, far from it, we simply argue that under a system where profits are in command, individual real economic freedom only exist for a small minority while the rest of us have the individual right to be economically exploited.

Iran is not the enemy
Mainstream media constantly lies to us about Iran and its nuclear program. Iran’s nuclear energy program began back in the 1050’s under the Atoms for Peace program supported by the Eisehower government of the US. This program was supported by the US in Iran up until the revolution in Iran in 1979, which deposed the Shah of Iran, a brutal monarchist but great friend of the US oil barons. The revolution In Iran was a popular movement of the people against the brutal dictatorship of the Shah who was anti communist and anti worker.
Since then, Iran is constantly accused of having nuclear weapons or harbouring an illegal nuclear arms program. Iran has never had nuclear weapons, has never wanted to build nuclear weapons. They are a member of the nuclear non-proliferation treaty. Iran has been investigated by the International Atomic Energy Agency regularly. Every nuclear power site in Iran is under surveillance twenty four hours a day. According to the Atomic Agency Iran is complying with and they have never violated the non-proliferation treaty. They have never built nuclear bombs.
In 2015 the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) was signed between Iran and the P5 +1 (The P5+1 refers to the UN Security Council's five permanent members (the P5); namely China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States; plus Germany) countries was signed. Known as the Iran Nuclear Deal, it was signed in Geneva and the deal was that Iran was further restricted in its peaceful nuclear program, so that sanctions would be lifted by US led imperialism. The Trump administration accused Iran of violating the deal and pulled out of the Iran Nuclear Deal in 2019. The International Atomic Agency has said Iran has never violated the nuclear deal.
There have been four other ex*****ons of nuclear scientists prior to the Iran Nuclear Deal in 2015. According to a leaked report from the White House, these ex*****ons were committed by the Mossad and the Mujahedin-e-Khalq, who were listed as an Islamist terrorist organisation in the 1980’s but taken off that list by Hillary Clinton even though they have murdered thousands of Iranians and even killed Americans. They are of course now friends of the US as they work tirelessly to bring down the Iranian Revolution.
The ex*****on of Iran’s top nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh on Friday 27th November, again signs are pointing to Mossad (Israel). It is impossible to separate Israel from the US. Israel receives arms, weapons and was financially propped up by US led imperialism until 2007 because “of robust domestic U.S. support for Israel and its security; shared strategic goals in the Middle East.” (Congressional Research Service, https://fas.org/sgp/crs/mideast/RL33222.pdf).
Iran is the victim of terrorism, this ex*****on is part of the on-going attacks on Iran for maintaining its independent sovereignty and developing “not socialism, not capitalism but Islam” a path to a more equitable society. Iran’s support for Venezuela, Syria and its friendly relations with China and Russia has earnt it the hatred of Wall Street. Wall Street is controlled by the oil barons and Iran, Venezuela and Russia are the few oil producing countries that Wall Street can’t control and profit from.
The attacks on Iran continue because Iran is refusing to bow down to US led imperialism and presents competition for US imperialism and this cannot be tolerated. This is the crux of the matter. We should demand the Australian government condemn these attacks on Iran and other sovereign independent nations by US imperialism and demand Australia withdraw support for economic wars. We should develop trade with all countries based on a win-win mutually beneficial relationship.

I have decided after much deliberation that I will run as a local candidate for the Strand Ward in Hobson Bay. It is part of a Victorian Trades Hall campaign to prevent the continued privatisation of local government services. A great person once said, “Every cook has to learn how to govern the State”. Covid 19 is showing how this system is incapable of looking after people. So, we need a new system but we need to begin to develop that new system in the old one, we need to form councils and assemblies that can take over. We need the cooks to start to learn to do that and if we do not start somewhere we will be doomed to our armchairs. I don’t expect if elected to make great changes but I want to take the movement to the masses by starting small in this election and using the position to raise issues and educate.
