Today we remember Private Matthew Lambert, 26, born in Kogarah NSW, who tragically lost his life on 22 August 2011 after being wounded by an IED in the Khaz Oruzgan region of Afghanistan.

Matthew was a sniper with 2RAR, leading his team into an overwatch position when he stepped forward to search for IEDs with a Minelab detector — a task outside his role and qualifications, but one he took on to protect his mates. That act of courage and selflessness reflects exactly who he was as a soldier and as a man.

He had previously served in East Timor and was respected for his professionalism, calm nature, and unwavering loyalty.
