What happens when making work more efficient, actually makes some jobs more demanding?

AI and digital technologies are rapidly changing the way Australian workplaces operate, including in local government.

Automating routine tasks can free up time and improve productivity. But it can also mean workers spend more time on complex decisions, difficult conversations, complaints and other cognitively or emotionally demanding work.

And that's where an important WHS question emerges:

Does the technology reduce risk or simply change the nature of the risk?

From work intensification and ‘always on’ expectations, to over-reliance on technology and the challenges of workplace change, councils need to consider the WHS implications of how AI changes the experience of work.

In July, we were ecstatic to hear that Toowoomba Regional Council has received $145M funding under the Residential Activation Fund (RAF), one of the largest competitively awarded capital infrastructure grants secured by an Australian local government.

We are exceptionally proud of our Grant Office team, who worked tirelessly with Toowoomba Regional Council on this grant submission, which will deliver long-term, sustainable community benefit through water infrastructure for future housing construction.

We are regularly hearing how difficult it is to fill positions in regional and remote areas, particularly when the requirements are for a short-term contract. Based on our discussions with councils, we’ve created an interim candidate solution with experienced local government professionals who are available for short- or long-term contracts. We have also increased our capacity to act as your back-office support service in human resources, legal and governance, procurement and probity.

As councils look to the future, the need for strategic planning, sustainable funding and a skilled workforce has never been greater. Whether it’s securing major infrastructure grants, identifying new funding opportunities, sourcing experienced interim support or building workforce capability from within, we are ready to support councils to plan confidently and deliver lasting outcomes for their communities.
