An early start to the day for members of our brigade, with the brigade paged out at 2.25 am to a report of a single motor vehicle accident with possible persons trapped. On arrival a car had hit a power pole at Welshmans Reef with no driver to be found, the pole had snapped in half bringing the power lines down. The brigade then set up some traffic management along with the support from the Maldon Fire Brigade, with the police trying to track down the driver, no luck there!

At 4am on Friday 03 July 2026, an initial MINOR flood warning has been issued for the Loddon River at Newstead.

The river is currently at 3.12m and is STEADY.

Please check the Bureau of Meteorology website daily for further updates.

Earlier this morning, the brigade was responded to a possible car smoking after an accident. Turns out a motorist had not seen a flooded causeway and drove into the water. The motorist was fortunate that the water was not very deep and although her car was unable to continue, they were able to escape the vehicle and make it to dry land.

Floodwater can be extremely dangerous. You have no idea how fast it is moving, how deep it is, if the road still exists under the water, or what else is in the water across the roadway. It gets worse in the dark as the water is often almost impossible to see until it is to late, as was the case for this motorist this morning.

We urge you, please take care during this current bout of wet weather. Local roads, causeways and floodways may be subjected to localised and/or flash flooding. Please, do not drive through flood water.

Working smoke alarms save lives............and so can doors.
This video clip shows a recent unit fire in Sydney. Firefighters are standing in what appears to be the room of origin, and then open a door to a bedroom where an resident and their dog were rescued from the fire. Their closed door saved their lives.
As we can see, this was very effective, but if the fire started in the bedroom while they were asleep, smoke alarms outside would be ineffective.
Ensure you have working smoke alarms in ALL bedrooms, where the occupant sleeps with the door closed.

Just after 2pm today, brigade members were paged to support Maldon Fire Brigade to a single vehicle car accident on the Maldon-Newstead Rd, near Maldon. A single white van had left the road, appears to have rolled after impacting a tree. The driver, who was mechanically trapped in the vehicle, was extricated by SES and Ambulance Victoria and has been airlifted to Melbourne. They were conscious and alert throughout the incident however the nature of their injuries and the current condition are unknown at this stage.

There has been a lot of rain and wind around and the roads are quite slippery. Add in the amount of leaf litter and debris on the roads and this increases the lack of friction and makes conditions more challenging.
We implore motorists to please, drive to the conditions and if you need to, slow down, and we call on everyone to exercise care and patience. In these conditions, getting frustrated behind a slower driver, will potentially make matters worse. Please be safe out there. We don't like going to any jobs, but MVA's are often particularly nasty.

Well done to both Maldon Fire Brigade and Newstead brigade members on their rapid response today and the work done in difficult conditions. Our thanks also to the Castlemaine SES, VicPol and of course, AV.

We are creating a list of people that might not be able to change smoke alarm batteries or test their alarms. If you need assistance doing this please message and once we have the list we will arrange a day and time that suits.

A working smoke alarm halves the risk of fatality in a home fire. Yet, nearly half of the homes damaged or destroyed by fire in the data did not have a working smoke alarm.

Service award's and Brigade award recipients from our awards presentation night on Saturday

Last night, the Newstead CFA celebrated our members and their contribution to the brigade and our broader community with our annual dinner and awards night.

The following members were recognised for their outstanding efforts:

Anne-Marie Flenley - 10 year medal,
John Bell - 20 year medal,
Florence Hepburn - 45 year medal,
Carmel Longmire - 45 year medal,
Janet Trudgeon - 45 year medal (posthumous),
John Alexander - inducted as a CFA Life Member and awarded 45 year medal,
Lyndsay O'toole - 55 year CFA Life Member medal.

Brigade awards were presented to the following members:

Ray Stevenson was awarded the Russell Hodges Firefighter of the Year award,
Anne Perkins was awarded the Captains Award, and
Jono Chaney received the Rookie of the Year Award.

A special thank you and certificate of appreciation was presented to Scott and Melissa Chaney from the Newstead Country Store in recognition of their continued support in fundraising endeavours.

Lastly, and certainly by no means not the least, Grant and Kathy MacDonald were presented with a certificate of appreciation in honour of their involvement and contribution to the community for the past 27 years.

All in all, a great night shared by nearly all brigade members. Unfortunately, a few members couldn't be with us on the night, but they were certainly in our thoughts.
