Support Chilwell Library

Support Chilwell Library Chilwell Library was saved from closure in 2017 and we are now working hard to improve the library We now enter a new phase, with a new name and a new purpose.

In June, 2017, the interim council of the City of Greater Geelong decided to close the Chilwell Library, Newtown, with very little notice and no community consultation. A small group of concerned local residents, members of the library, began the fight to save Chilwell Library, Newtown’s only remaining community hub and a highly valued, intimate, friendly, sun-filled space for young and old alike

to enjoy books, magazines, children’s programs, computers and company. With great support from our local community, this fight was ultimately successful. The Save Chilwell Library Group led this fight and developed this Save Chilwell Library page. In the years since, the Save Chilwell Library Group has not stopped the fight for Chilwell Library, but has continued to meet regularly and to lobby both the council and the GRLC for improvements to the library. As a result, the library underwent significant refurbishment in 2019. Since then, the Save Chilwell Library Group has been advocating for further improvements to this much-loved community space, including the addition of meeting rooms and internal toilets, and opening up the southern aspect to take advantage of the view over the park, while retaining the much appreciated sun-drenched northerly aspect and intimate, “second lounge room” feel. The Save Chilwell Library Group is now the Chilwell Library Group and this page will hereafter be known as the Support Chilwell Library page. As we move toward a new phase in the development and growth of Chilwell Library, we continue to seek the support of you, the users of Chilwell Library, and local residents of the area. New chapter for Chilwell library 📚

Our beloved Chilwell Library is turning a new page with a major redevelopment. This upgrade will further enhance the library's role as a vibrant community hub.

Thanks to a $2.5 million investment, supported by a $150,000 grant from the Victorian Government’s Living Libraries Infrastructure Program, you can look forward to:

☀️ A brighter, more inspiring space to read, learn and connect.
🤝 New meeting rooms for your local groups, clubs and community programs.
🚻 Improved amenities, including brand new public toilets, for a more comfortable visit.

The library is now temporarily closed to make way for this transformation, with construction kicking off from 7 July. We expect the doors to reopen in mid-2026.

While we're busy writing this exciting new story, book it over to our other friendly neighbouring libraries: Geelong Regional Libraries, Geelong West, Belmont or Highton.

We’re excited for this new chapter of Chilwell Library and the benefits it will bring to our community.

Chilwell Library Upgrade Update
This week our group, The Chilwell Library Group, met with the 3 Council Officers responsible for community infrastructure planning and development to advocate for our Chilwell library upgrade to proceed as planned.

The aim of the meeting was to ensure the project remains on the priority project list and allocated funds from both state and local governments remain earmarked for the Chilwell Library Upgrade Project. We continue the fight for the vital upgrade of our community hub.

If you would like to help, email our local Councillors and state member and ask them to ensure the allocated funding to the Chilwell Library Upgrade Project.
