|| UPDATE ON CLIMATE ADAPTION STRATEGY 2024-2036 ||

Council adopted the Climate Adaption Strategy 2024-2036 in August 2024 to strengthen community resilience and prepare for projected climate change impacts. At the Council meeting held on Wednesday 3 June 2026, a report was presented providing an update on progress to May 2026.

Since the Strategy was adopted, steady progress has been observed across the strategy’s five key focus areas, which include supporting community preparedness for extreme weather, strengthening the climate resilience of infrastructure and natural assets, encouraging climate-smart practices in farming and business, and embedding adaptation into Council’s own operations.

Key achievements to date include:
➡ working with emergency services to boost bushfire and heatwave readiness in local communities including preparation and maintenance of Wimmera 72 website and preparation of fire ready guides for Nhill, Dimboola and Rainbow township.
➡ integrating climate adaptation measures into planning and asset management.
➡ ongoing pest and w**d control to protect biodiversity including tree planting initiatives funded through Victorian Landcare Grant program to support restoration of habitat for native fauna.

You can read the full report in the Council meeting Minutes for this meeting (see item 10.2). They are available on Council’s website at www.hindmarsh.vic.gov.au/council-meetings.

|| FOUR MILE BEACH CHAMPGROUND REOPENED ||

Four Mile Beach Campground, located within the Lake Hindmarsh Reserve, has reopened following a temporary closure throughout May 2026 to undertake essential upgrades and maintenance.

Hindmarsh Shire Council closed the campground from 1 May 2026 to complete electrical and plumbing works and to install updated signage outlining conditions of use.

Following a review of the Residential Tenancies (Caravan Parks and Movable Dwellings Registration and Standards) Regulations 2024, which impose specific compliance obligations on caravan parks, including standards for utilities, facilities, and management Council has transitioned to a campground model.

Key changes include:
➡ The removal of public access to powered sites, encouraging self-sufficient camping.
➡ Transition to a free camping model, eliminating the need for on-site fee collection.
➡ Retention of key amenities, including:
🚿 Coin-operated hot showers.
🚽 Public toilets.
🍢 A BBQ shelter available for public use.
➡ Installation of new signage clearly outlining conditions of use and camper responsibilities.
➡ A maximum stay limit of 14 consecutive nights.
