This week, our team said goodbye to Ranger Bas, our Senior Ranger!

You might recognise him from our crocodile shows, presenting our bird shows, or sharing his knowledge during our venomous snake shows. Or perhaps you know him from all the social media content he’s helped bring to life, or from his time as our Volunteer Coordinator!

Bas has been a huge part of the Sanctuary over the past two and a half years, and we’re going to miss having him around.

We’re wishing him all the best on his next adventure as he travels the world photographing birds and works on his novel which is set to be published late next year.

Stuart from Sunshine Coast Snake Catchers 24/7 and Jeremy from Townsville Snake Catchers 24/7 stopped by to meet Krakatoa, our 5.1-metre estuarine crocodile!

With the cooler winter weather, it’s important to make sure Krakatoa stays active and gets plenty of exercise engaging in natural predatory behaviours. After a few jaw pops and explosive jumps from Krakatoa, he was given his favourite snack - a chicken wing!

We were honoured to help celebrate Cliff's 99th birthday today at Good Shepherd Nursing Home! 🎉

After seeing the wonderful response to his daughter-in-law Leone's Facebook post asking people to help make Cliff's birthday extra special, we knew we wanted to be part of the celebrations.

Tirari the bearded dragon and Sylva the carpet python joined us for the visit.

Ever wondered what a cassowary sounds like?

Cassowary rumbles are called “booms” and are the lowest pitch bird call out of any bird in the world.
These deep, resonating sounds can travel through dense rainforest and are thought to play an important role in communication. They can also make a variety of rumbling noises and hisses. Their close relatives, the Northern Cassowary in New Guinea, can even make a rattling noise!

Two years ago, Duane Tod Ollerton’s wish was to visit Billabong Sanctuary with his wife and three daughters and meet the meerkats up close through Ambulance Wish Queensland.

On the second anniversary of his passing, Duane's family and niece returned to honour his memory. Wearing sun shirts featuring a photo of Duane meeting the meerkats, they booked another meerkat encounter to celebrate his life and remember a very special day.

Thank you for letting us be a small part of keeping Duane's memory alive. 🤍
