Fishability

Fishability provides a range of programs and plays an advocacy role in promoting inclusive participation in recreational fishing.

Fishability is a not for profit organisation that delivers programs and activities for anyone who wants to fish! We support all members of the community including those who require assistance with fishing, wheelchair access and amenities. We have identified the very best fishing spots in Western Australia for our community of more than 100 volunteers and 3000 anglers. Fishability started as a smal

l Perth based not for profit organisation in 2003 with a small handful of volunteers. We have now grown to an organisation of more than 100 volunteers and 3000 anglers across Perth, Geraldton, Mandurah, Albany, Busselton, Bunbury and Waroona. Nev Thomas was the founder of Fishability who worked as a volunteer liaison officer for the Department of Fisheries and checked bag limits. He discovered a group of people who were keen to fish but needed a helping hand and Fishability was born. Fishability acknowledges that our fishing activities are undertaken on the ancestral lands of the First Australians. We acknowledge the First Australians as the traditional owners of the lands where we fish and we pay our respects to their Elders both past and present.

The Ammo Jetty is a favourite for our Perth South Jetty Program!

With the recent announcement that work is set to commence on the new jetty to provide a safer and modern structure that includes more than double the fishing space in deep water and a wider main deck we look forward to hearing more as part of the next Working Group meeting😊

The works are scheduled to be completed next year and we are looking forward to getting out on the new jetty!!!

A big shout out from Fishability to the State Government for the new gear for our Albany Program!

As part of the WA Government's Small Election Commitments we have upgraded our gazebo's, fishing rods and electric reels (for those who can't use traditional reels). We also replaced the hydraulic ram for better and safer operation of the Nev Thomas😊

These upgrades help keep our Fishability safe and accessible and hugely contribute to the enjoyability of our program!

This week in Mandurah the team took out students from Fairbridge College for a beautiful day on the water 😊

Great to see everyone having such a lovely time and a shoutout to the Marine Rescue Mandurah team for the wonderful work they do. Its nice to know they are there!

Plus our Jetty Fishers enjoyed a day in the Shire of Murray on the Murray River, everyone's welcome at Fishability and we love our furry fishers too!

Fishability is blessed to have the most amazing volunteers😍

The Fishability Board would like to give a huge shout out to one of our Mandurah volunteers, Gary Russell-Brown!

Gary is a driving force for accessibility in Mandurah. From lobbying for the accessibility fishing platform, to being involved in its design, to the official opening its been about 4 years of tireless and passionate involvement.

The culmination of all these efforts on opening day for the new platform was Fishability's Come and Try Day. An amazing day full of fun and fishing! The heart of what Fishability is all about, just like Gary😊

Great news! The Quinns Fishing Platform project will proceed as planned with construction expected to begin in November 2026 🙌

The City of Wanneroo voted at the recent council meeting to dismiss a motion for further consultation and proceed with the project as planned! The strong community response and positive feedback played an important role in demonstrating just how much support there is for better fishing access in the northern suburbs.

This platform will create a safe, accessible land-based fishing opportunity for families, kids, seniors and fishers of all abilities.

We can't wait for it to be ready 😊

A big Friday shout out to the Shire of Murray for their Community Assistance Partnership Fund grant to Fishability 🤩

The funding was used to purchase suncream, hand sanitiser, wet wipes, chairs, rod and reel combos as well as hooks, buckets and gloves to help keep our activities safe and gear ready to help participants experience the joy of fishing😊

Today we are sending a shout out to some of our wonderful suppliers of our bait and help with our tackle! WA Bait Supply Whitey's Tackle & Camping Tackle World Miami Geraldton Sports Centre Tentworld THANK YOU!

From supplying us week in week out across the State with our bait, lending us gear when we've been short on equipment, providing discounts to update our gear , sponsoring fundraising events and generally just being wonderful humans we are so grateful!
