🔥 Gas detection isn’t just a HazMat skill anymore — it’s a core skill for every firefighter 🔥

The NFPA 1010 Standard on Professional Qualifications for Firefighters is changing. Although this does not directly apply to Australia, the expectations around atmospheric monitoring and gas detection training are about to become mandatory.

Firefighters are increasingly operating in environments where dangerous gases are present long before visible signs appear. Hydrogen Sulphide, Carbon Monoxide, and other volatile compounds are now recognised as major contributors to line-of-duty cancers and cardiac events, yet many firefighters still receive limited hands-on training with gas detection and atmospheric monitoring equipment.

The challenge for many fire agencies is simple: How do you build competency with multi-gas meters without exposing crews to real hazards or building specialised training facilities?

This is where the LION Gas Trainer comes in.

The Gas Trainer allows instructors to safely simulate %LEL, O2, CO & H2S, giving firefighters the opportunity to:

Last week we had the privilege of supporting the NSW Rural Fire Service with a live demo of our ATTACK™ Digital Fire Training Panels and Smoke Generation Systems.

Combining augmented reality flames, sound, and reactive smoke, the system creates ultra-realistic fire scenarios — simulating A, B, C & E class fires and handling up to a 70mm charged hose line.

From level 1 to 10 intensity, the fire grows, spreads, and adapts to every move. It's immersive, pressure-tested training without the live fire risk.

🔥 No turnout gear to clean
🔥 Just back-to-back scenarios, again and again and again.

Whilst not a replacement for live fire, it’s the perfect tool to build skills, challenge crews, and maximise training time safely and effectively.

We’re excited to share that early works are underway on three major new training facility projects across Queensland and Victoria, set to roll out over the next 18 months. These projects are being built by LION EMEA and delivered by BullEx Australia, who will supply and install the training systems on site.

Two of these sites will include custom-built carbonaceous burn cells, each equipped with afterburners to support cleaner, more controlled live-fire training.

The third site will feature one of our Live Fire GFT Naval units, alongside a Breathing Apparatus Trainer and a Damage Control Unit designed to realistically simulate marine emergencies in compliance with Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) standards.

We’re committed to helping build safe, skilled response teams with practical, effective training solutions.

This weekend, the BullEx Australia team headed to Tamworth to exhibit at the NSW RFSA Conference, 2025. It was a great opportunity to reconnect with existing customers, meet some likeminded people and showcase a range of our Digital and Live Fire training props and accessories.

We also had the privilege of delivering handover and training for another Gas Fire Trainer (GFT), proudly supplied by BullEx Australia and built by LION EMEA. This project has been over three years in the making—from laying the initial foundations to the final build and handover training. BullEx Australia’s Type B Gas Technicians put the final work in recently to complete a complex custom installation, featuring two 3.5-tonne gas bullets, with liquid and vapour lines supplying gas to both the GFT and the Hose Line Training System.

The NSW Rural Fire Service Tamworth District is leading the way in live fire training, with their training ground now featuring a custom gas installation, Gas Fire Trainer, Carbonaceous Fire Trainer, and a Hose Line Training System including a live fire Car Prop, Pressure Vessel & BBQ Prop—proudly supplied by BullEx Australia in partnership with LION.

This week we were on site at the Great Barrier Reef International Marine College's Multipurpose Emergency Response Training Simulator (MERTS) that was retrofitted by BullEx Australia & LION protects (EMEA) over 12 years ago.

This custom-built unit is specifically designed to train for emergency scenarios on board a vessel, such as fires or leaks. It is tailored to meet STCW standards, making it ideal for training individuals pursuing coxswain licenses, as well as Defence personnel, Patrol Boat staff or anyone wishing to pursue a career at sea.

Our BullEx Australia technicians service the simulator twice a year to ensure it remains reliable and fully operational, and even after 12 years of continuous use, it continues to train staff effectively every single day.

This time round we are also installing a new smoke delivery system, along with a brand new SG4000 Smoke Generator to allow to trainers to isolate smoke to different rooms onboard the training unit.
