NSW Justices Association State President Kathryn Leaney and the Board acknowledge with great sadness the passing of our past Patron, former NSW Governor Dame Marie Bashir, on 20 January 2026. We join her many admirers and colleagues in extending our sincere condolences to Marie’s family.

Professor Bashir was appointed the first female Governor of New South Wales in 2001 and served with distinction until her retirement in 2014, the same year she was appointed a Dame (AD) in the General Division of the Order of Australia. She was a steadfast supporter and Patron of the NSW Justices Association throughout her term as Governor.

We were recently asked if we could certify a copy of a digital Medicare card.

We asked the Department of Communities and Justice and their response is:

___

A digital copy of a medicare card downloaded from the My Gov app is not the same as a copy of the original card, therefore the copy presented by the client cannot be certified.
___

Therefore we are unable to certify a copy of a digital Medicare card.

A client presents with an affidavit with a number of annexures. Whilst processing the annexure you notice there is a blank page with a page number.

Are you permitted to remove a blank page from an annexure?

A client presents with a 40 page affidavit with 20 or more annexures.

Are you permitted to suggest to the client that they combine the annexures together and mark the bundle as an exhibit?

25/04/2025

A client presents at a Community desk with a statutory declaration and you question them about the content to ensure that they understand what their declaration is about.

The client responds "I don't wish to disclose that because people could hear."

What are your options?

State President, Kathryn Leaney and the Board of the NSW Justices Association pauses to remember those Association members who paid the ultimate sacrifice during all armed conflicts.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old. Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them - Lest We Forget
