Did you know that Smoke Alarms only last 10 years?
Under Australian Standard AS 3786 (Smoke alarms using scattered light or ionization), smoke alarms shall have a recommended service life of at least 10 years under normal conditions of use (AS3786-2014 Clause 4.1).

There are two types of photoelectric smoke alarms scattering lights and light obscuration but, how do they work?

Part 1 - Scattering Light Smoke Alarms.
Light scattering detection chambers are arranged so the light source does not normally fall on the photodiode sensor. When smoke enters the chamber, light is scattered by reflection and refracted onto the sensor. If the amount of light falling on the sensor reaches the preset criteria, the alarm is triggered.
