Marble Hill

Marble Hill Marble Hill Viceregal Residence from 1878, ruined by bushfire 1955, now privately owned and rebuilt.

For 75 years "Marble Hill" served as the summer residence of the governors of South Australia until it was gutted in the Black Sunday bushfire of 1955. The Ruin was under the care of the National Trust for 25 years and Friends of Parks for 15 years. Despite the best efforts of volunteers, the property remained a ruin for 60 years. Marble Hill Heritage Group has owned Marble Hill since 2009 under a

Heritage Agreement, which defines obligations to
(1) Reconstruct the Ruin
(2) Maintain the Grounds
(3) Host Open Days
(4) Protect the property from Bushfire

Reconstruction of the Ruin commenced in 2015. This page helps inform the public about Events and Open Days. For more History, see

Season’s Greetings! Then and now… The hand-coloured photograph showing Marble Hill covered in snow, dates from August 1905, nearly 120 years ago. It was used as a postcard to encourage tourism and migration: “Come to South Australia - it’s just like home!” The second photo taken recently shows the rebuilt ruin nearly complete, almost 70 years after it was devastated and burn to a Ruin in the Black Sunday bushfire of 1955.

We are grateful the grass fire at Sutherland Road was brought under control so quickly. In that southerly wind the fire could have rushed up the heavily wooded hillside to threaten several properties including us. A big ‘Thank you’ to our local volunteer CFS brigades Norton Summit - Ashton CFS Brigade, Basket Range CFS, and Montacute CFS Brigade & Cherryville CFS as well as CFS SA air support and SA CFS Promotions Unit. Wishing you all a safe & happy Christmas with no Emergency call outs! 🎄🍒
