If your workplace, home, school or building is equipped with Smoke Masks & Emergency Escape Hoods, the chances of survival can greatly increased. Emergency escape hoods provide protection from the toxic fumes, and protect your airways from toxic smoke. This protection buys you precious time and allows you to evacuate through smoke safely. In the event of a fire, an emergency evacuation can be seve

rely hampered by the smoke and fumes that are created. Highly toxic fumes created in fires can lead to serious poisoning – in fact according to recent research up to 80% of deaths that occur in fires are due to smoke inhalation. If you are caught in a fire, the smoke makes it not only dangerous to your health, but it can make it difficult, even impossible, to evacuate safely. For people with accessibility limitations, the level of danger is even higher. EvacuLife are the leading supplier of personal emergency evacuation equipment for the home, workplace, school and healthcare. To protect yourself, your family and your employees a sound emergency evacuation plan is vital, and should include provisions for those who may need assistance to exit safely.

There will be fatalities! It’s not if, but when! was the subheading of a blog post I wrote on 26 October 2017, in which I raised my early concerns about the lack of fire sprinklers and the failure to apply a Class 3 classification under the Building Code of Australia for Specialist Disability Accommodation.

This blog is now a detailed follow-up to this post as a result of the tragic fire over the weekend that resulted in the death of David, an NDIS participant, in a house fire. It identifies issues and my initial recommendations on what needs to be done to protect the most vulnerable in our community. It covers:
● Failure to Apply the Correct Building Classification
● NDIA’s Responsibility
● State and Territory Building Commissions
● Local Governments' Responsibility
● Retrofitting Fire Sprinklers

Sadly, as I predicted in my blog post on October 26, 2017, the provision of housing for people with disability under the NDIS without fire sprinklers would create death traps by not protecting the very occupants the housing is provided for. We have now seen this play out following the tragic fire in Spring Farm, Sydney, NSW, over the weekend, resulting in the loss of a life of an NDIS participant in a house that did not protect its occupants with fire sprinklers.

Stay tuned for a more detailed response to the issues around Life Safety in NDIS properties that I am currently preparing.

The fire alarm in his UK school starts blaring while smoke rises through the air, causing widespread panic. You are instructed to stay put during an emergency, yet your classmates are already running towards safety. You are in a wheelchair, and there is no possible way to escape. Lucas Vezza-O’Brien experienced a frightening school fire incident, which exposed serious issues about accessibility and safety at educational facilities.

Is the Fire Safety of NDIS Participants Being Compromised

It is imperative to challenge the status quo regarding what is perceived as permitted building classifications versus what is genuinely safe for Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA).

I find it imperative to challenge the status quo regarding what is perceived as a permitted building versus what is safe for SDA
