Oakville Rural Fire Brigade is a volunteer, community based fire brigade, and a part of the NSW RFS.

Oakville crews were kept busy over the weekend with a number of incidents across the local area, alongside District training.

🔥On Sunday, we responded to a large grass fire at Mulgrave caused by an escaped pile burn. The fire burnt through a significant area before firefighters were able to contain and extinguish it.

Later that afternoon, Oakville crews responded alongside Box Hill Nelson Brigade and Fire and Rescue NSW Station 83 Riverstone to reports of a structure fire in Box Hill.
Firefighters arrived to find an unattended unit with a pot of food left cooking on the stove, which had caused a significant amount of smoke. Crews removed the pot and ventilated the unit.

That evening, we were called to a motor vehicle accident in Box Hill involving a motorbike and car. The motorbike rider was provided first aid by our crew before the arrival of NSW Ambulance paramedics.

🔥 Firies Climb for MND 🔥🏃‍♂️

Over the weekend, five Oakville Brigade members joined other Hawkesbury firefighters to take part in the annual Firies Climb for MND, tackling the Furber Steps at Katoomba from Friday afternoon, through Friday night and into Saturday morning.

The challenge sees firefighters and supporters take on the 1,902 steps of the Furber Steps, raising money for motor neurone disease research.

It’s a tough challenge, but an important one, helping raise awareness and much-needed funds towards finding a cure for MND.

🔥 Last night, Oakville and Box Hill Nelson Brigade were called to a grass fire in The Gables.

On arrival, crews found an area of roadside vegetation well alight. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire before it could spread further.

While the weather remains cold, we have had relatively little rain and much of the grass and vegetation across the area remains dry.

Please remain alert for fires and call 000 immediately if you see an unattended fire or suspicious activity. 🚒

Oakville Brigade had an early start today, responding to two incidents in the early hours of the morning.

🔥 Just before 1:00am, crews were called to a power pole alight. An electrical fault had ignited a small fire. The area was cordoned off, with the fire self extinguishing, allowing repairs to be made later.

🚙 At 5:46am, crews were then called to a motor vehicle accident with reports of persons trapped on Boundary Road.

Oakville attended alongside Fire and Rescue NSW Station 83 Riverstone and Box Hill Nelson Brigade.

Crews assisted with traffic management and assessed one occupant, who was treated for minor injuries. A small spill and debris was cleaned up before the road was reopened to traffic.

Please take care when driving on these foggy mornings. Slow down, allow extra stopping distance and be aware that visibility can change quickly.

🚒 Another busy for Oakville Brigade, with crews attending district training as well as three incidents in the area.

While returning to station from a motor vehicle accident on Boundary Road, Oakville, our crew noticed a dark column of smoke in the far distance that appeared to be growing.

🔥 Oakville Pumper headed towards the smoke to investigate, locating a property in Maraylya that it appeared to be coming from.

Crew entered the driveway and upon driving down the back of the property, found a vehicle fully alight behind a shed.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus quickly got to work, and within minutes had the fire contained, preventing it from spreading into the shed.

Additional resources attended from both Oakville and Hawkesbury Headquarters Rural Fire Brigade for further support and water.

While the vehicle was destroyed, the shed and its contents were fortunately saved.

The fire was caused by a nearby pile burn that had escaped into the surrounding grass.

Oakville Brigade was kept busy overnight with two protracted incidents.

🔥 At around 7:30pm, the Brigade attended an illegal pile burn involving building and construction waste at a commercial property in Vineyard. With assistance from Wilberforce Brigade and Freemans Reach Brigade for additional water, the fire was extinguished.

🚙 At around 10:30pm, Oakville along with Box Hill Nelson Brigade was then responded to a motor vehicle accident with reports of persons trapped on Boundary Road.

On arrival, firefighters found a four-vehicle collision with several people injured.
Firefighters provided first aid and established fire protection. Due to the significant amount of debris and a spillage across the roadway, crews remained on scene to assist with the clean-up and ensure the road was made safe.

80 Years of Oakville Rural Fire Brigade
The 1970s, the 1980s and The Studebaker

In 1970 the Brigade was moved to a new home, on land donated by the Smith Family, on the corner of Bocks and Hanckel Road, to which it stands today. That same year, an International chassis was purchased and fitted out as a bush fire tanker, to meet growing needs.

Perhaps the Brigade’s most iconic appliance arrived in 1971, with the purchase of an ex-World War II Studebaker US Army truck for $400.

The 6 wheel drive vehicle was fitted with a 3,500-litre water tank and a Godiva pump powered by a Volkswagen engine, capable of pumping more than 2,500 litres of water per minute.

The Studebaker quickly became synonymous with the Oakville Brigade. Over the next 26 years, it responded to well over 1,000 fires, including major bushfire campaigns across New South Wales such as Eden (1972), Mittagong and Newnes (1974), Baulkham Hills (1975), Sutherland (1976), the Blue Mountains (1977 and 1979), Goulburn/Taralga (1978), Bell (1982–83), Blacktown (1984), East Kurrajong and the Dharuk Tyre Fire (1986), Blaxlands Ridge (1990) and Baulkham Hills (1991), as well as countless fires throughout the Hawkesbury.

Today, the Studebaker remains one of the Brigade’s most treasured pieces of history. It was retired from operational service in 1997. It was used by the Brigade for displays and community events.
In 2022 the Studebaker, along with the Blitz was entrusted to the NSW RFS Heritage Group, who now care for and preserve these historic appliances at the RFS Heritage Museum.

A huge thank you to the teams from RFS Heritage and RFS Transport and Logistics for preparing our historic Studebaker and transporting her home for our Brigade’s 80th Anniversary celebrations.

We can’t wait for our members, past and present, to see her this weekend!

⚡️🧯 At around 3:00pm today, Oakville Brigade and Fire Rescue 83 Riverstone responded to reports of an electrical fire at a home in Oakville.

On arrival, firefighters located a meter box on the side of the house alight, which was quickly extinguished using a CO2 extinguisher.

As a precaution, a thermal imaging camera was used to check the roof space and wall to ensure the fire had not spread.

Fortunately, the resident noticed the smoke and immediately evacuated the home before calling 000.

Did you know? Around 40% of house fires in NSW are caused by electrical faults and electrical appliances. If your home was built before the 1980s, it may be worth having a licensed electrician inspect the wiring to ensure it remains safe. Older wiring can deteriorate over time, increasing the risk of fire.
