🌟 Local Government Week Staff Spotlight: Deb Keane 🌟

Meet Deb, Oberon Council's Tourism and Economic Development Manager - Visit Oberon. Deb's role is all about supporting local businesses, strengthening the local economy, and showcasing everything that makes the Oberon region such a special place to live, work and visit.

Working closely with local businesses, industry organisations, neighbouring councils, government agencies and community groups, Deb helps connect businesses with training opportunities, industry information and support programs. She also works with new tourism operators, helping them access resources and advice as they establish and grow. A key focus of her role is promoting the Oberon region and working collaboratively on initiatives that attract visitors and encourage them to stay longer, supporting local businesses along the way.

Over the past four years, Deb has helped deliver major events and projects that celebrate the region and contribute to the local economy.

What Deb enjoys most about working for Council is the strong teamwork across the organisation.
"With a very small team we can do a lot."

She values the support provided by staff across all departments, from outdoor crews preparing parks and public spaces for events, to depot staff helping behind the scenes and administration staff assisting with compliance and problem-solving. Most importantly, Deb enjoys being able to make a positive difference for local businesses and the broader community.

When she's not working, you'll likely find Deb at her favourite place in the Oberon LGA; her small farm, surrounded by pine forests, good neighbours and a few very special alpacas.

One thing that surprised Deb when she joined Council was the positive workplace culture.
"There is always someone with a skillset or an idea that helps towards solving a problem or making something better for everyone."

🍰 Favourite hobby? Baking very unhealthy but delicious cakes and sweets.

🌟 Local Government Week Staff Spotlight: Katie McMahon 🌟

Meet Katie, one of Oberon Council's Customer Service Trainees. Katie joined Council in April 2025 and has quickly become a familiar and friendly face for many community members visiting Council or getting in touch with our team.

As part of her traineeship, Katie will work across several areas of Council, including Planning and Development, Administration (including WHS and HR), Technical Services, Finance and Corporate Services. While no two days are the same, her primary focus is customer service and administration, helping residents with enquiries and connecting them with the information and services they need.

What Katie enjoys most about working for Council is the opportunity to learn from experienced staff, develop new skills and be part of a supportive team. She also enjoys the variety of work on offer and the chance to assist community members every day.

One thing that has surprised Katie about working for Council is just how diverse the work is.
"The amount of variety that is available in the work at Oberon Council surprised me the most."

When she's not at work, Katie enjoys exploring some of the region's most beautiful natural areas. Choosing a favourite spot wasn't easy, but Kanangra-Boyd National Park and Abercrombie National Park both made the list.

As one of Council's newest team members, Katie represents the next generation of local government professionals and the valuable opportunities that traineeships can provide for young people looking to start their careers close to home.

📢 MEDIA RELEASE: Council Responds to OLG Decision, Calls for Stronger Accountability

Oberon Council has released a statement following the Office of Local Government's decision not to progress Council's referral regarding a councillor's conduct on social media.

While Council respects the OLG's decision, it remains concerned about the broader implications for councils seeking meaningful avenues to address conduct that undermines public confidence in local government.

The statement also outlines Council's concerns regarding proposed changes to the Model Code of Conduct and its ongoing advocacy for a framework that balances freedom of expression with accountability.
