On Friday the 28th of August, Hugo made the long drive over the mountain to Tamworth to compete in the penultimate round of the NSW schools Mountain Bike Championships, representing Old Bar Public School.

After some recent rain the trails were in perfect condition, with what is called "hero dirt"; no dust, no mud, and lots of grip.

The cross country (XC) race was first, with 5 laps of a loop track. Hugo looked absolutely busted after the third lap, but managed to dig deep to come away with a second place.

The enduro race came next, with 4 timed downhill stages. The person with the fastest total time over all stages is declared the winner. Hugo had the fastest time in the U9 category, with a total time of 4:08.7, with second place a close 4:11.3 behind.

Going into the final enduro round at Dungog at the end of Week 9, Hugo sits in equal first place with a total of 180 championship points.

The final XC race will be at Newcastle at the end of Week 6, Term 4.
