Public speaking continues to be an important part of learning at Orange Public School, helping students develop confidence, communication skills and the ability to share their ideas with others.
Each year, students across the school have the opportunity to participate in the long-standing and highly respected CWA Public Speaking Competition. Students prepare and deliver speeches in their classrooms, with the highest-performing speakers progressing to grade finals held at school.
This year's school finals showcased an exceptional standard of public speaking, with students demonstrating confidence, preparation and impressive presentation skills. The finals were well attended, providing an opportunity for families, staff and students to celebrate the achievements of our young speakers.
A special thank you to Mr Graeme Edwards for coordinating the competition at Orange Public School. Mr Edwards was delighted by both the high level of participation and the outstanding quality of speeches presented throughout the competition.
Congratulations to our 2026 Orange Public School champions:
🏆 Year 3 – Georgia B
🏆 Year 4 – Alexander O
🏆 Year 5 – Aela G
🏆 Year 6 – Joshua C
These students proudly represented Orange Public School at the District Final hosted by the CWA. We are incredibly proud of the way they represented themselves and our school, performing admirably at the next level of competition.
Well done to every student who participated and had the courage to stand and share their voice.

This year for Reconciliation Week, OPS students and staff explored the theme ALL IN, which is a call for all Australians to commit wholeheartedly to truth-telling, justice, and reconciliation every single day. We enjoyed learning about the meaning of Reconciliation Week in class and making posters to hold proudly during our reconciliation walk.

Today, the students and staff at Orange Public School commemorated National Sorry Day.

Held annually on May 26, National Sorry Day is an opportunity to pause, reflect and learn about the lasting impacts that historical government policies have had on the survivors of the Stolen Generations.

As part of our commemorations, Year 2 students were visited by Wiradjuri Elders Uncle James Williams and Aunty Julie Armstrong, who talked to the students about how events such as Sorry Day, Reconciliation Week and Mabo Day have shaped our country.

Students were also treated to a Welcome to Country in Wiradjuri language and enjoyed completing an art activity using traditional cultural symbols.

At the end of the session, Aunty Julie presented Mrs. Woodward with a beautiful set of handmade clapping sticks as a thank you for welcoming them into our school to share their stories.

We feel very fortunate that we are able to engage in conversations about the painful parts of our history in such a respectful and compassionate manner, as we commit to building a reconciled society, inclusive for all.

At Orange Public School, student safety is always our priority. As part of our regular school procedures, students practise and become familiar with a range of safety responses that may need to be enacted at different times.

This week, students will become familiar with the bell sequence and internal phone messaging used during a lockdown procedure. These practices help ensure students and staff can respond calmly and safely if required.

For schools, lockdown procedures are often used for situations such as a stray dog entering the playground, or a spill of cleaning chemicals that requires an area to be temporarily isolated while it is cleaned and made safe.

During a lockdown procedure, students continue learning as normal. If students are on the playground, they calmly return to classrooms or indoor spaces to continue with quiet indoor activities. Classroom doors are locked and, if required, blinds may be drawn to limit visibility into learning spaces.

Students remain supervised by staff, with learning continuing as usual until an “all clear” notification is provided through the school’s internal phone system advising that the situation has been resolved. During this time, external school gates may also be locked and access to classrooms temporarily limited.

By practising these procedures in a calm and supportive way, we help students feel confident, prepared and secure in their school environment.

Today, Orange Public School proudly took part in our community ANZAC Day march, standing alongside others to remember and honour those who have served and sacrificed for our country.

Our Captains Lachy B and Francesca L, and Vice Captains Bella B and Charlie K led our school with great pride, and we were incredibly impressed by the respectful conduct and presentation of all students. It was also special to see many students sharing personal connections to ANZAC Day, wearing medals in honour of family members and reflecting on their stories.

Earlier this week, we also came together as a school community for our ANZAC Assembly, led by Mrs Kate Harris and our student leaders Francesca L, Bella B, Charlie K and Callum B, alongside our Aboriginal Cultural Ambassadors Isabella C and Remy.

We are so fortunate to have such talented musicians within our school, who contributed moving performances that added to the significance of the occasion. Evie C performed Abide With Me on clarinet, Joshua C played The Last Post on trombone, and Hamish A and Hugo S performed Reveille as a trumpet duet. Our marching drummers were also a highlight to conclude the assembly.

A respectful and meaningful week of remembrance for our school community. 🌺

There’s something special about seeing the arts bring a school back together. This week, our students have been fully immersed in three hours of performing arts workshops, led by industry professionals from not-for-profit organisation Upstage. The energy, confidence and creativity on display has been incredible—a powerful reminder of the impact these experiences can have on every child.
A huge thank you to Jess and the Upstage team for launching their regional tour with us. Opportunities like this are made possible through the success of the PSO Showcase, which we proudly support each year. Profits from the concert help bring this regional tour to Orange schools, subsidising access for our students and reducing the need to travel to the cities to experience high-quality performing arts opportunities.

Today our staff came together for a powerful and purposeful School Development Day focused on disability, neurodiversity and inclusive education.
We deepened our understanding of how to better support every learner in our care. From exploring neurodiversity and differentiation, to strengthening our approaches to supporting students with ADHD and autism, staff engaged in rich professional learning grounded in both research and practical classroom strategies.
Our breakout sessions allowed staff to tailor their learning, with a strong focus on executive functioning, inclusive adjustments for practical activities, and supporting successful transitions into mainstream classrooms. These conversations were thoughtful, reflective and centred on what matters most — ensuring every student feels known, supported and able to succeed.
A sincere thank you to our incredible staff facilitators — Jacqui Taylor, Jade Jones, Sarah Rees, Jack Daintith and Katy Dunlop — for generously sharing their expertise and leading such meaningful sessions. Your leadership continues to strengthen our collective capacity as a school.
A special thank you also to Tegan Davis (Executive Support) for coordinating the day so seamlessly. Your organisation and care behind the scenes ensured a smooth and highly valuable learning experience for all.
We are proud of the ongoing commitment of our staff to inclusive practice, and to continually refining how we meet the diverse needs of every student at OPS.
