Happy World Milk Day! 👩‍🌾 🐄

This year, World Milk Day shines a spotlight on the incredible women who keep the dairy industry going and in NSW their contribution is enormous.
Women play a vital role across our 443 dairy farm businesses, helping our state produce 12% of Australia's milk supply every single year.

From managing herds to running operations, women in NSW Dairy are up before dawn making it happen…every day.

This World Milk Day, we celebrate you. 🥛

💧 On-farm water storage levels are declining across parts of NSW, and producers face real pressure.

These conditions are being monitored using remote sensing technology and reported monthly in the State Seasonal Update. This gives us broader visibility of water availability across NSW and helping us better understand the pressures facing farming communities right now.

If your water situation is becoming a concern, for your livestock, your operation, or your planning - you don't have to navigate it alone.

🌾 Great news for our grain growers!

We know soil-borne diseases are a real and costly challenge - to the tune of $1.7 billion annually across Australia. That's why we're proud to share that Primary Industries and Regional Development scientists are leading two major national research projects to help tackle this head on.

Dr. Steven Simpfendorfer is taking on Fusarium Crown Rot and Dr. Kurt Lindbeck is leading the national effort against Sclerotinia Stem Rot, as part of the Grains Research and Development Corporation's $34.66 million, five-year Soil-Borne Disease Initiative.

This research is all about giving practical, proven tools to protect your yields by:
✅ Reducing reliance on costly fungicides
✅ Delivering locally proven disease management strategies
✅ Supporting conservation cropping and stubble retention systems

As drought continues to affect many parts of NSW, it’s a good time to check in on your stock water, feed supply and summer planning.

If you’re wondering:
• Do I have enough water for the next 3–5 months?
• Will my paddock feed or fodder get me through to autumn?
• Should I consider a stock containment area to protect groundcover and soil?

You’re not alone and you don’t have to plan on your own.

Producers across the central to the north of NSW have experienced an intense dry summer, multiple heatwaves and a limited autumn break.

This rapid drought onset, which set in around October 2025 after several strong seasons, has pushed pasture growth rates into the bottom 5% of the 40-year record over the past six months.
What's being seen on the ground:
🌾 Pasture growth well below average across the region
🌾 Feed quality and availability down in many paddocks
🌾 Producers making proactive calls on stock numbers and supplementary feeding
