Today the Orbost Fire Brigade was proud to hand over a second hand Halligan tool to the Wairewa Fire Brigade after recently upgrading our own equipment.

After hearing Wairewa crews had attended car accidents and at times needed to try opening bonnets using shovels and axes, Orbost felt it was important to help out a neighbouring brigade by donating equipment we no longer needed but was still in good condition.

Brigades helping brigades is what CFA is all about.

Congratulations to our own Alana and Wairewa’s Bronnie on successfully completing their Respond to Urban course today at the West Sale Training Ground.

This course spans 7 weeks of intensive training, teaching members how to safely respond to and manage structural fires. The training includes breathing apparatus operations, internal firefighting, search and rescue, and learning how to work safely inside smoke-filled buildings under challenging conditions.

A fantastic achievement by both members and a credit to the effort and commitment they have put in over the past seven weeks. Well done Alana and Bronnie!

When using your fireplace in winter, it’s important to be fire safe 🔥

✅Always use a fire screen in front of an open fire.
✅Keep items that can burn, such as clothes horses, at least 1m away.
✅Extinguish open fires before leaving home or going to sleep.
✅Always supervise children near open fires.
✅Ensure ashes are cold before discarding.
✅Only burn dry, clean wood.

Congratulations to past Captain Neil Findley for being recognised this year, and to all the other Orbost, Marlo & Newmerrella community members who have been recognised.

🌟💙 Let’s celebrate the incredible people who give so much to East Gippsland this National Volunteers Week.

The East Gippsland Honour Roll shines a light on the remarkable volunteers who make our communities thrive. From emergency services and conservation to sport, arts, aged care, youth programs and community leadership, the diversity of volunteering across our region is nothing short of inspiring.

Across East Gippsland – from Mallacoota to Orbost, W Tree, Lakes Entrance, Bairnsdale, Paynesville and beyond – volunteers are showing up, stepping in and making a real difference. Every name on the Honour Roll represents a story of generosity, commitment and community spirit.

This is what makes East Gippsland so special – people helping people, in every corner of our region.

To every volunteer, thank you. You are the heart of our community, and we are proud to celebrate you.

Did you know that almost two thirds of people who die in house fires have a
disability?

Prevent, Detect, Escape is a free online learning module to support at risk
people with planning for fire emergencies at home. The module is made for
people at increased fire risk, and for those who support or care for them.
