Orchard Hills Rural Fire Brigade recently responded to a ride-on lawn mower that caught fire while slashing long grass. The fire spread from the mower and started a small grass fire.

While we are not currently in the Bush Fire Danger Period and today’s Fire Danger Rating is Moderate, this incident is a timely reminder that fires can still start from machinery, especially when working in long or dry grass.

Hot exhausts, engine heat, sparks, and grass build-up around moving parts can all ignite vegetation.

Before mowing or slashing long grass:

✅ Check your mower or slasher is well maintained
✅ Clear grass and debris from around the engine, exhaust, belts, and moving parts
✅ Stop regularly to check for grass build-up or overheating
✅ Avoid working in the hottest or windiest part of the day
✅ Keep a water source or fire extinguisher nearby
✅ Have a mobile phone with you in case you need to call Triple Zero

Even in moderate conditions, a small fire can spread quickly through dry grass.

If a fire starts, call Triple Zero (000) immediately.

Today, on ANZAC Day, we remember all those who have served and sacrificed for our country.

They shall grow not old,
As we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them,
Nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun
And in the morning
We will remember them.
Lest we forget.

This Youth Week 2026, Orchard Hills Rural Fire Brigade is proud to recognise the incredible contribution of our young members aged 12–24.

From our Junior's Program through to active firefighting roles, young people are a vital part of our brigade.

Our Juniors develop skills, confidence and leadership, helping shape the next generation of firefighters. We are incredibly proud of their achievements, including being current State and National Championship winners.

Across the brigade, it is not uncommon for our trucks to respond with 16–24-year-olds filling most of the seats, with some already taking on important roles such as Driver, Breathing Apparatus Operator and Crew Leader.

The future of our brigade is strong because of the commitment, capability and passion of our young members.

If you are aged between 12 and 24 and would like to be part of Orchard Hills Rural Fire Brigade, we would love to hear from you.

Where is all this smoke coming from?

We’ve seen this question popping up a lot on local community pages lately so here’s the answer:

The smoke you’re seeing is from hazard reduction burns, not back burning.

So what’s the difference?
Hazard Reduction (HR) = Planned burns carried out in safe conditions to reduce fuel before fire season.

Back Burning = A firefighting tactic used during an active bushfire.

Recently, Orchard Hills crews have been assisting with these planned burns. Yesterday, crews supported a hazard reduction in Colo Vale, with more burns planned over the coming days and weeks (weather permitting).

Why do we do hazard reduction burns?

These burns play a critical role in keeping our communities safe by:
• Reducing fuel loads
• Lowering the intensity of future fires
• Helping protect homes and property
• Supporting safer firefighting operations

By reducing excess vegetation, future fires are generally less intense, easier to control, and can cause less severe environmental damage compared to high-intensity bushfires.

We understand the smoke can be unpleasant at times, but it’s all part of important work being carried out by the NSW Rural Fire Service and partner agencies to help protect lives, property, and the environment.

So what's all that smoke ?

It’s firefighters working behind the scenes to reduce bush fire risk and keep the community safe for the years to come.

Can our fire truck reach your home in an emergency?

Recently, our brigade attended multiple properties where overgrown branches and other obstructions made driveway access difficult for responding crews.

Fire trucks are much larger than a standard car and need clear space above and beside them to get through safely. Overhanging branches, blocked access, and hard-to-see property numbers can all slow emergency response.

This long weekend please check your property access:
• Trim back vegetation along driveways.
• Check gate width and keep access ways clear.
• Make sure your property number is easy to see from the road, even at night.

Clear access and visible address details help us reach you faster when seconds count.

Last night, Orchard Hills crews alongside NSW RFS - Regentville Brigade and NSW RFS - Wallacia Brigade crews responded to a kitchen fire in Orchard Hills.

Firefighters quickly got on scene and confirmed there was no fire extension beyond the cooktop.

This incident is a timely reminder to always keep looking while cooking.

Today we celebrate International Women’s Day and recognise the incredible women who serve in the NSW Rural Fire Service and here at Orchard Hills RFS.

Women play a vital role across our brigade, assisting in our operational space and helping ensure our trucks continue to turn out and support the community every day.

Today some of our younger female members were lucky enough to visit Sydney Helicopters, who are contracted to the NSW RFS for firefighting operations, alongside our cadets.

If you’ve ever thought about getting involved, now is a great time to join.
