โš ๏ธ The Fire Danger Rating in the Bathurst, Lithgow and Oberon LGAs tomorrow (Friday the 10th of April, 2026) is HIGH.

Without the requirement for permits in the Chifley Lithgow District, and no TOTAL FIRE BAN declared, we urge residents to monitor conditions closely if continuing their burns, and encourage those thinking of new ignitions to postpone until easing conditions over the weekend.

Tomorrow may see some areas experience EXTREME fire behaviour for isolated periods.

Good news โ€” the Bush Fire Danger Period has wrapped up in Bathurst, Lithgow and Oberon Areas.

But before you go firing up the backyard like youโ€™re auditioning for โ€œAustraliaโ€™s Next Top Bonfireโ€โ€ฆ ๐ŸŒช๏ธ๐Ÿ”ฅ

A friendly reminder:
You now must notify the NSW RFS and your neighbours 24 hours before lighting any burn. However, if you are in an FRNSW area, you will still need a permit.

Itโ€™s quick, easy, and stops your peaceful cleanup from turning into a surprise visit from half the districtโ€™s fire trucks.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Submit your burn notification here: www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/notify

Because nothing says โ€œcommunity spiritโ€ like keeping everyone informed before you light things on fire. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Thanks to great work by a working group of volunteers and staff partnered with Transport NSW and NSW Farmers a new Conditional Registration for Farm Firefighting Units has come into place.
From 7 October 2025, the new scheme will make it easier and more affordable for farmers and rural landholders to use Farm Firefighting Units (FFUs) on public roads when responding to nearby bush fires.
โ„น๏ธ Whatโ€™s changing?
๐Ÿ“ Farmers can now legally use FFUs beyond their own property during bush fire emergencies.
โ„น๏ธ Lower registration costs:
๐Ÿ“ First year: up to $209
๐Ÿ“ Following years: around $126 (or $75 if no inspection required)
Includes inspection, licence plate and conditional rego.
Under the scheme, vehicles will be subject to the following requirements:
โœ… Vehicle inspections as per the Authorised Inspection Scheme to establish registration, with inspection required every second year and registration to be renewed annually.
โœ… Firefighting equipment must be permanently and securely attached to the vehicle.
โœ… Vehicles must only be used for emergencies, not regular operations.
โœ… May use roads up to 50km away from garaging address east of the Newell Highway, with no distance limit from garaging addresses west of the Newell Highway.
โ„น๏ธ Check eligibility and apply via Service NSW from 7 October 2025:
๐Ÿ‘‰ Apply for conditional vehicle registrationhttps: https://www.service.nsw.gov.au/transaction/apply-for-a-farm-firefighting-vehicle-registration
This scheme recognises the vital role farmers and landholders play in protecting rural communities during bush fire emergencies.
๐Ÿ”ฅSafety Guidelines for FFU Operators & RFS Members๐Ÿ”ฅ
โœ… Keep safety first at all times.
โœ… Maintain clear communication with your crew and the RFS.
โœ… Ensure the RFS Officer in Charge knows youโ€™re on the fireground.
โœ… Work with the RFS โ€“ never alone.
โœ… Always wear PPE meeting Australian Standards.
โœ… Keep vehicles and equipment serviceable and compliant (e.g. Road Transport Act 2013).
Together, we can strengthen fire preparedness and community safety.

The Bush Fire Danger Period (BFDP) begins in the Bathurst, Lithgow and Oberon Areas on Wednesday, 1 October 2025.

If you haven't already, now is the time you must
โœ… review your plans
โœ… prepare your property and
โœ… have the important conversations with your family about what you will do on days of increased fire danger or if a fire should threaten your home!

During the BFDP, landowners and managers must obtain a Fire Permit before lighting any fires, plus you must also notify your local fire authority and neighbours of your intent to burn at least 24 hours in advance.

Fire is an important tool for managing fire risk and supporting farming operations, but it is crucial that conditions allow for safe burning and the necessary precautions are in place. Escaped burns can have devastating outcomes and can result in heavy penalties.

If a fire does escape, make sure you ๐œ๐š๐ฅ๐ฅ ๐“๐ซ๐ข๐ฉ๐ฅ๐ž ๐™๐ž๐ซ๐จ (๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ) immediately so that emergency services can respond quickly and minimise the damage.
